Hi,

I'm hoping to find work in a public school in late August/beginning of September.

However, I'm reluctant to apply to the general EPIK program and risk getting placed in a school whose location I don't like (also, I'm hoping for middle/high school).

I'm hoping to wait for specific positions to open up and find one of those.

Three questions:

1) When do such positions typically start being advertised? When should I get in contact with a recruiter?

2) Will the fact that I'm outside of Korea put me at a serious disadvantage (assuming that I have all my paperwork ready to go)?

3) Does the application for a specific position involve all the same things as applying through the general Fall Intake (letters of reference, sample lesson plan, etc.)?

IF you want to apply to specific schools or within a specific area then you need to be in Korea, have everything in hand (including a bilingual cover letter and resume) and hit the bricks dropping your application off in person.

If you are abroad then your chances of finding work in a public school, in a specific area are slim and with middle/high school positions being rapidly phased out getting slimmer by the month.

1) April to June.
2) Yes for specific schools/areas. No for general PS applications.
3) Yes.

Thanks for the response, ttompatz. Just a quick point of clarification:

I was actually referring to specific positions that are advertised on a recruiter's website. I see one recruiter's website that is currently advertising specific positions that start this month or in April (I was hoping to do the same thing this fall). In this case, wouldn't I just apply through the recruiter?

Yes, assuming those positions actually exist (beware of bait and switch or sending documents and getting the "job was canceled" after the recruiter gets your paperwork).

Okay, thanks. I had the feeling my little scheme was doomed for collapse from the get-go. Sad

ttompatz: Could you answer this somewhat related question for me? Say one were to apply for EPIK and receive an offer. If the location were less than ideal and you decline the position, would that have any bearing if you were to then apply for GEPIK? I've read the two processes are entirely separate, but I just wanted to get your expert opinion.

I think that's only Seoul for now. EPIK still has teachers in middle schools and high schools. You can use a specific province or metro recruiter as listed in the job section on this site.
