I began working at a Seoul Hagwon in November and it is now closing due to economic strain. I found out today that we will not be having any more classes on Monday. Financially, I am stable for now; however, I am unsure as to what my new course of action should be.
I need to find a job with haste, but I would prefer to do it without switching to a D-10 which is what immigration (1345) is telling me to do. I still have my visa and I would like to transfer it to a new job. That is possible, right? I should just need a release letter and a new contract before my current visa expires, right? I am quite unsure of my position and would rather not put myself in a position where I would be deported or unable to switch to a new job due to past hangups.
What advice would you have for my situation? |

As far as I know, switching to a D-10 does not require you to have to submit new documents. If they are having financial difficulties, why not talk to the owner and see if you can just go ahead and get that release letter? I'm sure they would be happy to let you go. |

The issue is that there will be no classes on Monday. As far as teachers and kids are concerned, the school is closed.
I am trying to get a release letter, but the main issue is about my status. Is my visa still valid?
As far as just the release letter goes, there is some confusion, but I should be able to receive one. Although, the director might just turn her phone off and kind of sack everything. It's not particularly easy to contact her. |

Your visa would always have some grace period.
Immigration wouldn't know until your school said something.
My suggestion is to find another school. Then, tell your current school you have a place to go to.

I think the rule is that your visa is valid for 14 days after your last day at work. Of course, if your school does not inform immigration that you are no longer working then it wouldn't really matter. |

This happened to me in October. Your visa is fine, for now, but you will have to switch to a D10 or find a new job within 2 weeks. You don't need a letter of release if the school is closed (at least that is what immigration told me). My employer gave me one anyway, so you might as well see if you can get one just in case. Make sure that you have copies of all of your documents from immigration because once at your new job the DoE might ask for them as well as a new health check (I had to get one). |
