Cutting right to the chase:

I'm teaching at a hagwon in Busan, and my last day is May 16th. My E-2 visa expires on May 26th. My ARC expires on June 9th.

Normally, the 10 days after I finish working would be enough time to go to immigration to switch to a D-10 visa. However, I have a plane ticket to leave the country for a vacation on May 18th returning May 28th. Also, May 17th is a national holiday (Buddha's Birthday), so immigration will be closed.

So essentially, can I go to immigration one or two weeks early to switch to a D-10 visa? If I can't, can I go the morning of the 16th (before work) to switch my visa? If I do that, is there a delay in the processing of the new visa (since I will need my passport and ARC to leave the country on the 18th)?

I realize I may have left myself between a rock and a hard place. I booked this vacation in November, and at that time I wasn't planning to stay in Korea longer. I'm just trying to find a possible solution.

Any information would be very helpful. Thank you.

Also something I hadn't considered: is it possible to get a short extension of an existing E-2 visa?

You can get an E-2 visa extension, you just need to go to Immigration to sort it out. I don't know the details but I am sure Ttompatz can help.

Visa and contract are not relevant.
The ONLY date that is important is the date on your ARC.

You can leave and return as long as your ARC is valid (up to 30 days beyond the end of employment) and change your status to D10 as long as your ARC is valid.

Take your vacation.
When asked at immigration as you pass through ICN tell them you ARE returning.
When you return, switch to a D10.

Thank you so much ttompatz! You might be tired of hearing it, but I really appreciate your guidance. I thought the visa was relevant for getting back into Korea. This has taken lots of stress off. Thanks again. Smile
