Wow. I've been following his opinions since the early 80s. I can remember his televised reviews of Spinal Tap, Back To The Future, and Heathers, when they were all first released. I remember him comparing then-newcomer Christian Slater's acting style to that of Jack Nicholson, which later became a standing joke about the guy.

Usually didn't read his column in real-time, but delved into his anthologies a bit. I suppose he wasn't the most academic film-critic. His prose could probably be described as "workmanlike", which isn't neccessarily a bad thing. Definitely the most public face of American film criticism.

Oh, and let it not go unmentioned, he also wrote the screenplay for this camp classic, directed by Russ Meyer.

The Wikipedia article notes that he was the first film critic to win the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism and lists all his "best of the year" film selections... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Ebert

I only read a couple of his reviews, but often watched his show with Gene Siskel growing up. Think I agreed more with Siskel than I did with Ebert...

He had a career writing reviews that went back to 1967 with an amazing archive online. It's not often you come across a film critic who has such knowledge. He continued writing right up to about the last month before he died. I'll definitely miss his reviews. Reading some of the critics now makes me appreciate him a lot more.

Actually it might not have been until the last month but a few months ago at least he was still writing reviews.
