When ordered, car owners will receive a mobilization warrant, and must turn over their cars to designated places.
If not, they will face fines up to 20 million won, or prison sentence of up to seven years.
The computer system selects the cars randomly, according to the military official. However, SUVs and newer models are more likely to be mobilized, he said.
Gyeonggi and Gangwon Province residents may be high on the list, since those are the places bordering North Korea.
And the younger the car owner is, the more likely they have to give up their car, he added.

Way da go Korea!
Yep lets not upset an older person in times of an 'invasion' - remember we're a Confucian society!
I can just see some young soldier trying to take a car off an old guy
please give me the car
NO
 Okay sorry!

Please give me your car.
No
Please give my your car or i'll shoot you!
Okay! |

If the north was attacking I would have no problem giving my car to a soldier. The ROK troops and US troops are just trying to do their job. They are trying to save as many south Koreans and foreigners from death from an attack as possible. |

This is why I love Park Guen-Hye. She may be a conservative president, she's a hardcore socialist just like me.
She's using the North Korean military crisis as a very good opportunity to make South Korea into a socialist country.
It's not a bad thing if you think about it. I mean, she absolutely loves the socialist American president Barack Obama.
Always look at the bright side in life, I would say. |

In all fairness to old people in Korea - I'd think that a huge number of them would be right back in the thick of it given the chance!
I've met some 'bad-ass' - tough as !#!@$ old K people
I can just imagine the old ladies too with their prams and brooms, beating the reds! |

Dude, it's fricking war. That person you give up your car to is about to go through some of the most awful crap a human being can experience in order to protect you and save your life.
Get over your sense of entitlement. Good grief, can you imagine the OP during WWII and rationing? Pathetic. What kind of man adopts such an attitude while a war is going on and other men are about to go fight and die for them? Not to mention the fact that those old people probably lived through a war already for the well-being of their grandchildren.
Take my car. Heck, I'll drive ya'll wherever you need to go, night and day until the thing is over. Throw wounded people in there, let me help evacuate children and the elderly.
"No, this car is mine. You can't have it you grunt!" Ugh. I wish there was an emoticon for utter contempt.

Did you read the article SteelRails? It's a preemptive measure complete with a warrant and everything, not soldiers trying to dunebuggy in your Sonata up to the front lines after the fan has started splattering turds. |

I'm not sure why you put a question mark in the title. Like I've said before, when they take your car- they won't be asking. |

Obviously I was playing up the dramaticism, Of course I assumed it would just be for short-term basic transportation use. Taking the ol Santa Fe into a war zone is as dumb as it gets!
But it still stands. If your car gets selected, hand it over. If it gets commandeered, drive for them or give up the keys.
To complain about it is just utterly contemptible. 70 years ago our grandparents emptied out their kitchens of their luxury tin and steel, ate meager rations, and did whatever they could to support the cause. How could any of us face them if we had the OP's attitude? |

The majority of english teachers here probably dont have SUV's or big cars...
I seriously doubt they would ask you to give up you 1999 Matiz .... Whenenver i see a foreigner drive its either something small like a matiz or a POS sonata or similar =).
That being said... I wouldn't have any problem giving up my car if there was a full scale war... why not? Its not like i would be able to go anywhere with it if the country is under marshal law with all major roads blocked... |

Sometimes I'm really worried about the reading and comprehension ability of ESL teachers in Korea - This is a direct insult, aimed at you Steelrails!
I'll leave even more personal insults off the table at the moment.
If you're still reading 'metal head' I was IMPLYING that if a Korean soldier were to ask an old Korean guy for his car and IF the old guy said 'no' - what would happen?
Of course this would never happen if it was a US soldier, because they wouldn't even ask - they'd (in some cases - for balance) just drag them out the window!
Hearts and minds and all that!
You still reading Steel rails?
Give yourself a pat on the back! good boy!

Do you think it might be because older people are (typically) less physically mobile, and may rely more on their vehicles for transportation than younger people? |
