Not sure if this the right forum. Anyway. A student of mine was told he got the wrong answer on the following questions. He was not told the right answer. I was asked by his parent to tell him the right answer but I'm not 100% sure. Please excuse typos, I tried to check but may have missed something. Typos aren't the issue.
Science teaches us about symbiotic relationships in which two creatures form a relationship that helps both of them. Similar relationships are quite common in the business world. ____A____, consider any company, Alone, no single person can hope to be an expert in all parts of the company. -- research, engineering, accounting, manufacturing, marketing, etc. Together, ____B___, much more can be done. Cars are built, medicines discovered, and complex problems solved. By attracting and keeping people with the best skills in each area, a kind of symbiotic relationship is formed.
(A) (B)
Similarily..... however
For example .... however
For example.... moreover
Consequently.... moreover
Consquently.... for instance.
The student chose 'for example/however' and was told it was wrong. I am thinking For example/moreover since moreover means in addition to, additional evidence, etc.
Does that seem right? or would any of you choose another answer?
Which area does NOT belong
In an attempt to make packaging less harmful to the environment, one company has created a new green packaging material that looks like plastic but transforms to compost once it's thrown away. (1) Some grocerty stores are already using the material in their products, and customers are encouraged to return the packaging to the stores later. (2) From there, it is shipped to a recycling facility and processed into organic soil. (3) One current drawback is that this material is much more expensive than traditional plastics, but its cost should come down soon. (4) Plastic substitutes could also be used in products such as mattresses, rugs, and pillows to help the environment. (5) When it does, experts believe green packaging productionwill become a major industry in the U.S.
What section does NOT belong? My guess is (3) because the main gist of the article seems to be encouraging green packaging and this is a negative. The student chose (4) and it was marked wrong. |

| As far as I can tell, the student is right in both cases, so maybe the parent(s) should ask the person who told him he was wrong instead of asking you. |

imho the kid was right. Often texts made locally get these things wrong.
in the first question I don't think "For example.... moreover" works because seems odd to say "moreover, much more can be done".
"However" works because the previous sentence is talking about "alone".
In the second question my first thought was (3), but maybe (5) is the "correct" choice because it changes from "harm to environment" to "production". |

Question 1:
The correct answer is For example... However.
The first part of the example talks about the difficulty of doing work alone. After that, it discusses the advantages of working in groups, so a contrasting conjunction is needed.
Question 2:
Sentence four (4) does not belong. The main idea is an environmentally safe packaging material. Sentence four is about plastic substitutes in general, so it is a bit off topic. Also, sentence 5 has the phrase, "When it does," which refers to the idea of "but its cost should come down soon" in sentence 3. Sentence 4 is obviously not the antecedent for the "it" in sentence 5 and is therefore wrong.
The student was right in both cases. The answer key or the person marking the test was wrong. |

The student nailed it both times.
Whoever made the key should not be an English teacher. |

This issue is pretty common; I saw a few incorrect exam questions, and their answers, these were obviously wrong. I'd be interested knowing who creats the exams, along with answer keys?
I think the person that does this has to be overworked and/ or tired. |
