Just got contacted by a friend who worked in Korea with me, he's having a hell of a time trying to get his pension refund back in his home country. Something about being stuffed around with bureaucracy both his country's and the Korean Embassy there as well as the pension office in Korea that has his info but won't give him his money because he can't get anybody at home to sign his docs.

The K Embassy is refusing to accept lawyer's and other signatures but won't tell him who has to sign it. He's also upset because he heard that he could have got his refund at the airport when he was leaving Korea. I haven't heard this? Is it true?

In that case could he get his pension refund at Incheon Airport when he goes back to Korea on vacation? Sounds like the way to go for people with the same problem - it is their money after all.

The main thing is they want to be convinced enough that he is going to leave Korea.

Getting it from home is another, bigger, problem.

A return ticket home should be enough, and you might get lucky by just showing a new tourist visa. They might assume you will get another ticket home. Worse case, you get it and then go back a second time.

If you are going to leave Korea and return to teach again, then rules say you have to wait till you leave for good because the intent is for retirement. If you get it earlier, you are lucky.

Let this be a lesson and never leave the country until you have sorted out your finances. Also, don't wait (like I did) to set up any new accounts or internet banking plans the day before your flight (OMG Shocked).

Problems will come up and you will need a week to make sure you can access the account the way you want. Added to this, if you want to go to a third country, make sure passport issues are resolved because if you need a new visa processed they will need your passport. You won't be able to visit any banks during this time.

Don't you fill out paperwork with pension office before you leave and give them your banking info back home? They then wire the money to the account. Maybe you wait a week or so? That's what I always heard.
