|

I've read a lot on Dave's about how tough it can be to find a decent job teaching in Korea.
When I first applied and starting interviewing for jobs back in '05, my biggest stress was trying to keep track of all the job offers. Seemed overwhelming at the time.
My oh my how things have changed.
A couple of my friends who are long-timers in Seoul have been telling me how tough it has been for them. One of them has been unemployed for 3 months!
Now, since they were in Korea during the "good times" I'm sure they are pretty picky about the job they are going to take. Especially when it comes to working hours. And they may have to soon realize that beggars can't be choosers.
So I'm wondering, is it only difficult to find a decent job, say 2.3mil/mth for 8hrs/day max...if you aren't willing to look outside of Seoul and Busan?
Any different in Incheon, Changwon, Ilsan, Daejeon, Ilksan, Gwangju and so on?
I'd be happy enough to find a decent hagwon job outside a major center as long as it was within an hour of travel time. Eg Changwon to Busan. But I would not accept anything below 2.3mil. That's what I would need to meet my financial responsibilities back home and still living a decent lifestyle.
Possible? Probable? |

It seems like it's hard to find a job not teaching Kindy these days. Most of the job postings I've seen lately are for Kindy 9am to 630 or 7 pm. All those hours for an outstanding pay of 2.1 million. |

There is absolutely no basis for the "doom and gloom" posters to post negative opinions of the job market in Korea.
Demand still massively outstrip supply. Most applicants still have multiple job offers after a short time of looking.
The only scenario I can see problems would be if you were morbidly obese or something. Then it might take two months of job searching instead of two days. |

The stubborness of people to force themselves to stay and work in Korea boggles the mind. Go back home and make something of yourselves with what little dignity you have left. |

Remember that recruiters don't work for you...they work for commissions.
If you tell a recruiter that you prefer Seoul but are flexible they will tell you how hard they worked to place you in Seoul but that it can't be done.
There are jobs and yes there are jobs in Seoul.
In spite of it supposedly being an employers market right now I am amazed at how many people I met who are both rookies and morons who have job in nice parts of Seoul.
Tell your recruiter that you only want Seoul (or whatever it is that you want). Then he/she knows that that is the only way that they are getting a commission off of you.
Make no mistake....the market is more tight now than years ago, BUT anyone with a pulse and who weighs less than 400 pounds should not have a problem. |

Dodge man you should not attack other peoples "dignity" when you stay in Korea only because your wife makes a good salary. Seriously, these attacks of yours are silly, you can do better.
As for the OP...
Big cities are most in demand but also offer the most jobs so keep looking and you will find something. It may not happen as fast as it did a few years ago but it will happen. Just make sure your application is in order and that you have all your docs in hand when you apply.
As for recruiters, they are middle-men so use them as such. All they do is put an applicant in contact with an employer. Some will offer more in terms of services but that is just a bonus. You (applicant) pay the recruiting NOTHING, he is not your friend, your confident, your agent or your representative. He is a headhunter who matches people with jobs, period.
By all means be clear with your recruiter(s) when it comes to your preferences. That is a smart way to approach the job search. However, being too restrictive will prolong your job search so you need to find the right balance. Something like a list of larger cities for example (Seoul, Busan, Daegu..). |

I have to agree about your comment regarding Dodge7. I have never read a single constrictive post from him. It's all negative. He treats career TESLers like they are subhuman. |
