TEFL has always been full of idiots, pedophiles, the criminal and mentally unstable - Korea even more so than any other location.

Why do you think this? Do you believe there are many more pedophiles and criminals in TEFL compared to other types of work? Do you believe Korea has a higher rate of these types than any other country? How would you know? Can you support these claims? I won't argue about the idiots or mentally unstable part, but that's not unique to TEFL. |

I actually laughed out loud when I read your post. What, are you expecting me to pull out some academic study on the topic or something? I'm not aware of any study per se, but after teaching in several Asian countries for nearly two decades, I've met and heard about a lot TEFL teachers who've fit the above criteria.
TEFL in Korea, especially before the criminal history requirement, has been a pedophile's paradise career. Thailand, China, Taiwan, Cambodia, specifically.
Are you seriously really this naive? |

There's a reason why the criminal record check requirement exists in Korea for TEFL'ers.

People are always asking others to produce data to back up their exaggerated claims on here, I don't know why this surprises you so much. I'd say you were pretty naive not to expect it.
It's a safe bet that you're more likely to find pedophiles doing jobs where they can work closely with kids and in a country where background checks are less stringent, this could result in higher numbers of pedophiles working in Korea. Though you have to balance that with factors like people being away from their comfort zone, language differences etc...Asian countries such as Cambodia and Vietnam provide access to underage prostitution, which I don't think Korea does.
As for your comment about idiots and mentally unstable people, I've met far more people who fit those descriptions working in non-TEFL jobs in Korea but as we all know, it's all pretty subjective. |

TEFL attracts the mad and the bad. It always has. |

| Maybe I am naive. Dunno if I've met any pedophiles. The few criminals I can think of were locals in Korea; worked for a few of those. The unstable and idiotic were mostly also those few people I worked for. And it seems to me Korea has a lot of those, born and raised. Some might call that culture or something but I know they were just insane. |
