*Update
Some big news for Korean boxing.
On Sunday August 18th, Minwook Kim will defend his OPBF title for the fourth time against Japanese challenger Valentine Hosokawa (16-3-3). In case of confusion of why Hosokawa is black (I know some people will be wondering), he is half Nigerian. The fight will take place in Jung Gu Sports Center. I'm told tickets are 10,000 won but I am not sure how to get a hold of them.
The event will also feature female WBO titlist Suyun Hong's fight against Japanese Mari Ando for a WBO and WBA unification bout.
The real big news is that after Kim's fight, he will be joining Manny Pacquiao's camp as a sparring partner for Pac's upcoming fight with Brandon Rios.
This is a step toward Minwook's (and perhaps Korean boxing as a whole) entrance to the world level. Hopefully this will expose him to the international boxing community and get him some clout globally. Next thing you know, he might be featured in fights promoted by Top Rank.
I'm pretty happy for Minwook, my gym and for myself. Since Hosokawa is about my height and has a similar style, I've been sparring with Minwook for his camp. I was originally supposed to fight on the undercard of his upcoming match but that got changed. Regardless, I feel a bit of pride that I helped, even a little bit, arguably the best active boxer in this country.
On international news, the big upcoming event will be Mayweather vs Canelo Alvarez. What's even more exciting is that this event will also feature Garcia vs Matthysee, which will be a lot of action. I'm more excited about the Garcia fight since as usual, I figure Mayweather will school Canelo.

If a supposed top p4p fighter is going into one of the biggest fights of his career, excuses like that are irrelevant. Seriously, you lost because you weren't prepared? Well, who's fault is that?
From what I've seen, Rigondeaux is fundamentally the superior fighter, and I doubt Donaire is going to mention a rematch anytime soon.
Also wanted to add Zou Shiming's debut apparently got him $300,000 (that's more than the purse for Chi Injin's world title defense) and 200 million viewers. Korean boxing is seriously lagging behind Japan and China. I'm hoping maybe this surge in boxing popularity in Asia will also affect Korea. |

I'm not going to take a real stance because I am unsure, but is that really an accurate assessment of the sport's history in Korea? Maybe you did more research than me on the subject and I would definitely like to know more, but until then I question it.
In a way it makes sense because Kim's death did have ramifications for boxing's popularity on American network TV and the sport wasn't as popular overall in comparison to the golden era. But boxing is still a pretty big sport in the states and there is a lot of money behind it. And it's not like Korean boxing died overnight along with Kim. Yuh Myungwoo was decently famous during the late 80s and early 90s. Somewhere during the 90s it seems people started to stop caring. There were a few world champs but there wasn't as much interest. Choi Yosam is probably more famous for dying than for his accomplishments when he was alive. Considering the lack of interest of professional combat sports and martial arts in general here, I think there is more to it than one fight that happened a few decades ago.

Rigondeaux was clearly the superior boxer last Saturday - and he has good punching power as well - but I could see a more focused Donaire catching him with a big combination and turning the tables. Actually |
He wasn't the superior boxer on Saturday, he is the superior boxer. On a fundamental level, Rigo is simply better. His balance, positioning, use of foot work and feints are better. Its the type of difference that can't be overcome simply by better training the next time they fight. It's one that requires a complete breaking down of a fighter's style to mold him into a different type of fighter. At Nonito's age and stage of career, I doubt that would happen. Nonito's natural style is of a counter puncher, and he looked lost trying to be the aggressor. In fact, if you look at his previous fights, Donaire never looked good against a defensive opponent. It's hard to see Nonito catch Rigo with a combination when he could barely throw any combinations. And it's not like it was a close fight where Donaire could've won if he fought harder. Their skill difference was clear as night and day. I personally gave Nonito two rounds and I was being generous in the 8th.
For those who aren't in the know, Mayweather left HBO and is know featuring his fights on Shobox. That means no more 24/7, but instead the Shobox version called All-Access. Here is the first episode for Mayweather vs Guerrero.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xrqf_Z6cqes
It's pretty much the same thing. Hyping up drama, Floyd flashing his money, both guys talking about their past, etc. Trying to make this fight more than it really is. I don't like how they aren't showing their training as much and although I like Common, he isn't the best narrator.
Guerrero is a good fighter, but this is honestly nothing more than a tune-up fight for Mayweather. I can't see anything Guerrero can't do that Floyd's past opponents haven't done better. |

They have a shorter 1 episode version for Alvarez vs Trout that's coming up this weekend. Sort of like the "Road to..." series on HBO.

As for Kim vs Iwabuchi, I'm just as lost as you are. I really want to watch it live. I'm hoping somebody will upload the Japanese broadcast on youtube.
In other news, Mike Alvarado is apparently fighting Pacquiao in October. On paper it's a good fight although I wish Pacquiao would rematch Bradley already. I'm a little worried about Alvarado taking another brutal beating after taking two from Rios consecutively. |

I don't see Kim vs Iwabuchi there. I doubt people would bother to stream a OPBF title fight. I'm streaming Canelo vs Trout right now. Really interested to see how Canelo deals with Trout's style. |

I think Canelo definitely won that fight but I was a bit disappointed to see him gas in the later rounds and not adjust to Trout's style as much as I hoped he would. I scored the it way closer though.
Kim also beat Iwabuchi in an unanimous decision. |

thanks Rteacher for that last link! wotta a fight that Fury/Cunningham brawl must've been! 2 power-punches in the same match but i guess Tyson had more mojo behind his! he's undefeated...
ferm, i thought Trout would win after watching the early rounds but Canelo was just relentless in his sledgehammer punching style. i thought it was going to be closer, too.
wow, Kim won again, huh! that kid is fighting his way to the top! wish i'd seen that one, too.
i think Guerrero will knock-out Mayweather in the middle rounds. long shot i know but he has no other choice. no way he can go the distance with the Floyd and come out on top. he must knock him out. |

That goes for almost everybody who fights Floyd. It's probably more likely Floyds knocks him out. Can't see how Robert will win this unless he brings a gun to the ring. |
