How Korean golfers drove out the lesbians
This weeks "WTF moment in journalism came in courtesy of JoongAng Ilbo, a major vernacular, which on its online edition published an article titled Korean golfers drove out the lesbians from LPGA.
The writer makes a brave attempt at living up to the spectacular headline. The story beings with how Palm Springs doubles as the location of the LPGAs Kraft Nabisco Championship and home to one of the worlds largest gay and lesbian festivals.
It makes a reference to a 1990s golf analyst who then claimed that 40 percent of the players on the LPGA tour were lesbians. This is followed by a quote from Christiana Kim, the Korean-American golfer, who in her 2010 book "Swinging from My Heels estimated that the lesbian population on the tour was 10 percent.
The author then interrupts with his own journalistic insight: Kims claim that the lesbian "proportion being 10 percent is ''controversial since its safe to assume that the number is higher among ''western players. How does he know? Because, silly, everybody knows that none of the 40 Korean players on the tour are lesbian.
The column is wrapped up by casually mentioning Rosie Jones, the openly-gay American golfer, lesbian festivals in Palm Springs, and an anonymous LPGA official who is quoted ''driving lesbians off the tour was an accomplishment by Korean players.
At least, the newspaper showed a resemblance of good judgment by deciding not to translate this catastrophe of an article into English.

korea has thousands of homosexuals and bi sexual..both male and female.
Of course many koreans will not acknowledge the fact! Just like they don't acknowledge the prostitution...this country is BIG in prostitution and gay folks!
As is Thailand, Japan, China and every other country in the world.
There are hundreds and hundreds of WEB sites in korea with listings of korean men and women looking for the same sex partners according to some gay koreans that I know. |

Why do Korean women dominate the LPGA?
Ethiopians dominate long distance running and Americans dominate basketball.
But I'm curious, what factors have lead to the dominance of Korean golfers in the LPGA? |

Interesting question. Deftness with chopsticks?
I'd put my money on hard training young. A tiny rural elementary school I worked in last year was golf-centered, had its own driving range, a dedicated coach, & streamed promising students into secondary schools with serious golf programs. Focused development. Anything like that going on in your home country? |

^ I go with this...dedicated programs and a lot of serious professional training. |

It would be nice to see a link to the actual article. I tried looking it up but found nothing. |

All right. I'll say what all of you have been thinking but were to PC to say: A few of the Korean LPGA golfers are really butch. |

I know it's an old joke, but I still find it ironic for such a homophobic country as Korea having make-up products, purses, pastel colored/kapris/etc. clothing and homosexually suggested poses in ads directed at men. |

Especially the one who just won a tournament recently (Bee?) I think the ugly tree was extra special with her... |

It's because many Korean parents force them to practice 10 hours a day until their hands start blistering and bleed. Some of you may call it child abuse, but if they didn't practice so much, they wouldn't be on the LPGA tour winning big money. |

It takes more than skills to turn pro and remain on the circuit. I would imagine good South Korean players have few problems finding sponsors, hence the relatively high number of them on the LPGA tour. After all, golf is big business in Korea. |

Korea does this kind of training in all sports. They don't dominate in anything else except some winter olympic sports. |

How about archery, fencing, & shooting? They cleaned up at the last olympics. |

It all started for the Koreans back in the mid 90s when Pak Se Ri arrived on tour. The first time I saw her play I couldn't believe the size of her legs as the rest of her was reasonably slim. I later read that her father trained her when she was a teenager and one of the exercises he made her do was walk backwards up the stairs of their apt. building a few times every night.
Anyway, once she became successful on the LPGA, the floodgates opened for other Koreans. While she was born in America, Michelle Wie is also Korean and while she hasn't had a lot of success on Tour, she has done the best at the bank because of her sponsors, Nike and Kia.
I marvel how every female Korean golfer basically has the same swing. They all seem to be from wealthy families and many move to the US after showing promise on the Asian tours. I went to the Kraft Nabisco while in Palm Springs this year and it seemed 1/2 the golfers were Asian and most of the Asians were Korean. The winner, Park Inbee is Korean. This week they play in Hawaii and the tournament is sponsored by Lotte-that's how much Korea is involved in the LPGA.
As far as the lesbian thing goes, while most of the Korean golfers are very feminine, there are a few Koreans that are anything but, not saying they are but I wouldn't be surprised,
The top player on Tour the last couple of years is Yani Tseng from Taiwan. Again. I don't know but if you were to look at her picture you might wonder if she is make or female as you can see http://www.golfdigest.com.sg/hsbc/news/yani-tseng-birdie-machine-switches-lower-gear |
