That is not "inspiring".... it is tactless, foolish and irresponsible.
The vulgar western "couldn't care less" attitude is basically just selfishness and ignorance.
It does not encapsulate what "freedom" is meant to be about.
And (surprise surprise ) it does not go down well in any country. The problem north americans have is they never stop to think how they would feel if the boot were on the other foot. Its an arrogance that causes resentment, trust me. Please don't encourage this sort of attitude. Its the long termers that have to pay for this kind of short-term 20 yr-old-newbie- frat-stupidity. |
There is a lot of truth in what Julius said. Your actions can have an impact when you live abroad. In many ways they can be seens as portaying what expats are like when it comes to locals. The blog is a good example of idiocy. Living life on your own terms is one thing, not caring what others think is just being selfish and self centered. |

JTBC said a S.E. Asian's blog was an English teacher's blog so I doubt the other two writing on this other blog are American or teachers. But, did they do anything illegal other than have consensual sex with a Korean national?
North Koreans are brainwashed into thinking the Kim clan are Gods, S. Koreans are brainwashed into thinking Eng. teachers are all bad, unqualified, sex offenders, drug takers, and intentional AIDS proliferators. Did I miss anything? I just wish S. Korea would explain it or at least try to explain it to the U.N. |
If South Koreans thought that my friend, there would not be over 10 000 foreign teachers in Korea....just saying. |

Many South Koreans do think exactly that.
Just ask the anti-English Spectrum crowd, they'll give you an earful. |

Their hat fix has got to come from somewhere, so boring without it. Spread the hate! |

| I guess the main thing is that people should be careful about what they post on the internet. It's easy for things to be blown out of proportion and taken out of context on the internet. A few English teachers posted pictures of themselves posing with Korean women at a sexy costume party in Hongdae. Somehow that got turned into "English teachers have orgy with Korean women" (never mind that a lot Korean men and foreign women were also present at the party). The group anti-English Spectrum was formed. Some of the Korean women involved had to receive counseling because they were so traumatized by all that the hate that got directed at them after the incident. |

He does talk a little bit about it in his latest podcast. Go to about 17:45 in episode 15.

I'm just looking at the guy during the show and wondering what he must be thinking. All that time he spent building his career, learning Korean, being "accepted", and this is the thanks he is given. He has to sit there and explain some horribly produced video about a foreigner using lame pick up lines to have a one night stand with a Korean girl. If it was actually a carefully constructed argument that made valid points I could understand. Instead it was like some ridiculous skit made for a highschool class. It really makes me want to put effort into learning all about Korean culture and learning the Korean language. I can't think of a better way to spend my free time. Maybe then I will have the honor of watching a show like that and defending my fellow westerners. Seriously, what an honor, seriously. No....I mean seriously.
I think he is wrong in his podcast too. Korea does not have racism because it is homogenous. Korea is homogenous because it has racism. It is a country that has made a conscious effort to remain homogenous and free of other cultures. Korea is free to make that decision, but it shouldn't excuse ignorance. |

Am I the only one who notices some inconsistency in the view of age in what people write.
On the one hand its Korean people's fault for hiring people so young to begin with.
Yet on other threads constant rants against Korean deference towards age and claims that Korean people are much more immature in their 20s because they live at home with their parents.
Look you either are an adult or you're not. Being in your 20s is not an excuse for jackass behavior. |

Well said. I listened to what he had to say in his podcast and he just seemed to be making the same tired excuses in the hope he will escape any criticism. |

"Maybe if I try really hard they will like me and accept me": Thinks Sam I am. "I would not criticize Korea on a TV show, I would not criticize it to others, I would not even criticize it if paid to": said Sam I am. "Nor would I eat Green Eggs and Kimchi. Not here, not there, or anywhere."
Ok, mocking sarcasm of this apologist aside. Makes me wish I could speak the langauge. First time some Koreans talked sh!t about us whiteys if I were on a TV show; I'd be pointing out all their hypocracy in Korean in all of it's unabashed blunt glory. No apologies coming from my lips. That'd shut them up real fast! |

Why would it? Pointing out the hypocrisies of Korea-haters on these threads doesn't accomplish squat.
That's not to say you shouldn't speak your mind and point out some crap that goes on here. Might do some good. |

korea haters usually hate korea because of personal experiences.
the people we see on these tv shows usually hate foreigners because they saw a news report about X on MBC (or because their mum told them to).
slight difference... |

Interesting piece, the news reports on consensual adults enjoying a nice evening together, and yet, I haven't seen much about this on the news. Perhaps after all this time I still don't understand Korean culture.
| Quote: |
Go Young Wook admits to touching victims who averaged ~14 years old, asks for another chance. The average age of his victims was said to be 14.25 years old. Go Young Wook argued that all sexual advances were made under mutual agreement while the victims claim that he forced them.
Go Young Wook brought A (13 years old) into his car and back to his home and used his power/influence over her to sexually assault her. A week later, he called out A again and made her drink to commit another round of assault.
In the same year, Go Young Wook committed the same act with B (14 years old), as well as C (17 years old) at his own home.
While the three cases were proceeding with the court, he is also under suspicion of sexually assaulting D (13 years old) in his car through the use of force with his influence as a celebrity.
Go Young Wook denied all claims saying that all advances were made under the pretense of love/dating. C had initially refused to kiss him and Go Young Wook had promptly complied.
Go Young Wook also admitted to using force to hold Ds legs down when she was in the car but denies the rest of her allegations. |
But the best part is how he feels he's being treated unfairly.
| Quote: |
Go Young Wook stated on the 14th at the Seoul District Court, First off, I have been reflecting and felt many things while under custody about associating inappropriately with minors as a celebrity.
He also revealed his frustration as he commented, This issue began May of last year and none of the things I said were released, and when the press reported things one-sidely, my mother and I received a lot of pain and the fact that I met up with minors itself was being looked upon negatively even despite that the meeting was consensual, so there are things I didnt speak out on although I felt wronged in that aspect.
I would be thankful if you try to consider those aspects. If an opportunity is given to me in the future, even if I cant do the work I did before, I will do my best to live as a person who is of help to society, he concluded. |
So yeah, Koreans watch out for those foreigners but Korean celebrities trying to diddle your kids, it's ok because they're Korean. |

But you must understand he's not a pedophile. He's a victim of behavioral addiction according to the Chosun Ilbo:
| Quote: |
A Seoul district court found Go guilty of molesting a 13-year-old girl in December last year, raping another 13-year-old girl twice in 2010 and molesting a 17-year-old girl in the same year.
But he does not seem to be a pedophile considering that his victims were not children but rather suffers from a kind of behavioral addiction. Psychiatrist Lee In-soo said the fact that Go molested a 13-year-old girl last December even as he was being investigated for a similar offense attests to this theory.
Behavioral addiction is a form of addiction that does not rely on drugs or alcohol but on gambling, sex, shopping, food or other types of behavior.
Lee said people like TV personalities and politicians, who live in the spotlight and often do not have time to look back on their emotions can fall victim to behavioral addiction. |

Behavioral addiction? It must be quite common in Korea, judging by the number of Korean paedo- I mean "addicts" going to Cambodia every year to diddle little kids. |
