Are you joking? I lived by Jonggak for three years, until recently, and never saw this once.

I don't know how you missed it. The people talking on the makeshift stage spoke through a police-style loudspeaker even though the congregation was only a few dozen people. The people who weren't speaking were sitting Indian style on a tarp or a big blanket with a few in the back holding up homemade signs. They had their candles out when I would walk by after dark, and people in the back held up anti-US military signs regardless of the hour.

Even this past Saturday, there was a 35-40 year old Korean guy with facial hair halfway between Jonggak and Jongno 3-ga wearing large South Korean flag pins and a fedora, talking on and on about "Miguk." He was calm as he spoke, so I really don't know what topic he was talking about. I don't think he's a part of the larger group because its speakers are usually loud and very angry about the US military.

It seems to be an area where political activists gravitate toward.

Le sigh. The Koksan has the range with rocjet assisted ordinance to hit the northern parts of Seoul. However the majority of shells would be conventional and at extreme range would hit the least dense, northern most parts of Seoul.

I've heard you talk about the northern parts of Seoul on numerous occasions and I have to ask, have you ever been to 의정부, 노원구, 연신내, 은평뉴타운?

The population density of 은평구 is double that of 종로구 and even higher than 강남구.

I have not been to any of those places. However in a couple of posts, possible on other threads, I mentioned that while Seoul might be at the edge, Paju is certainly well within range of plenty of systems and you could get high civilian casualties there.

I wasn't arguing the point that North Korean artillery couldn't devastate a populated area, just that the "Seoul in a Sea of Fire" stuff is pretty hokey. No, 10 million people are not going to die in a sea of fire.

Actually this argument with me began with your insisting NK had few guns that could reach Seoul and that little damage would be caused by the North. Also your claiming that their guns are old and in such a state of disrepair that a much smaller number of them are even worthy of use.

In terms of death in Seoul, I suppose a few hundred thousand means nothing to you, then?

Yes, the number of systems that can reach Seoul is dramatically lower than what is claimed. As such, the damage would be significantly reduced, especially when you add in things like doctrine, maintenance, reliability, and counter-battery fire.

As for North Korea's maintenance, I think its rather obvious to anyone with any critical thinking skills that their army is in poor maintenance given its size and the GDP of the country, as well as the lack of training taking place and the fact that the nation is starving.

Outside of a WMD attack, I seriously doubt the ability of North Korean artillery to inflict several hundred thousand casualties on Seoul. Read up on the history of artillery bombardments. There just isn't anything like that that has ever occurred.

Now, yes, they could target other towns closer to the border, but the issue was Seoul.

And as fermentation pointed out, the value of shelling civilian targets is dubious at best as a full scale bombardment would lead to total war, and in a total war you would want to strike military targets. Why expend your ordinance and jeopardize your long-range artillery systems to kill 10-30,000 people and blow up a bunch of apartment buildings, chicken hofs, and Innisfrees?
