I know posts like this might be a little fishy and seem like it's spam and I promise I wouldn't do this if I didn't think it was absolutely necessary.

An English Teacher in Gwangju, South Korea (the big Gwangju in Jeollanamdo, not the one near Seoul) is in the hospital and needs help. She has Ulcerative Colitis and Blood Clots.

She needs B-Negative blood, which is rare. If you have B-negative or know of someone who has it who would be in or near Gwangju to come donate, please let me know.

If you would like more information or feel inclined to help, then please join this facebook group to help her:

I apologize if this isn't the correct forum for this, but I just really want to spread the word. I also know that some people here on Dave's might tend to take a negative reaction towards a post like this, but I am just hoping to find a few people who might be inclined to help out someone in need.

It all depends on the situation and the honesty of how things are handled. Don't expect much sympathy if someone is working illegally and then suddenly gets sick without medical benefits. Also, in the past, there have been some shady dealings with how donations were used. There was a South African woman who was in the hospital, and her friends and family were begging for donations until she was on the plane back to her country, meanwhile they never disclosed that the bills had been taken care of by the Korean authorities in her area and that a large donation had also been made by Korean authorities.

Everyone should be careful about donating to internet causes because many are not on the level. Do some research before you donate to any cause or person in need.

While I would tend to agree for money requests, its much harder to run away with blood.

I'm sure you've got it wrong about the South African lady, I think her name was Narelle or something like that. I had friends down in Jeollanam who knew about a South African lady badly injured by a fire started by a hateful adjosshi who screamed about waygugin and barking dogs, and threw a cigarette near the door of the apartment she was minding.

If she was on a plane back to South Africa, she was on it in her coffin because the poor lady died as the result of the injuries. From what I know her family in South Africa told people to stop donating when she was near death. From what my friends down there told me, her family and friends behaved very honourably at all times during this tragedy. The Mokpo Police Dept showed compassion and donated money they collected for her.

It would help more if you posted actual information about the woman and allowed us to see the facebook page without logging in. In the past that is what other people requesting help for sick friends have done.

Her friends can set it up so we can click to a link to see that facebook page with all the information. I have given to foreigners in Korea who were ill or injured in the past but only when I could click on a link and match the situation with a face and information. I suggest you and her friends do that.

Hey Everyone,

A few things:

First, for those of you requesting more info, here is a news article about Sarah: http://www.gwangjunewsgic.com/online/lets-help-sarah/

Second, as far as O- blood being acceptable, the doctors seemed pretty adamant that it had to be B-, but we have had so many offers of O-, that we are going to ask them again today if it would be okay.

Third, I understand that people might feel uncomfortable giving monetary donations to a stranger and that's fine. I am confident that the foreigner community in Gwangju can raise enough money for Sarah. The main reason for this post was to find people with B- blood. If you also feel compelled to donate some money too, that would be amazing!

Fourth, thank you to everyone who has made offers to help!

EDIT: Also, as far as the facebook group not being open... it's set on public. So, anyone should be able to see it. I am not sure why anyone would have trouble seeing it, but if anyone could give me some advice on how to fix that, I would appreciate it!

earthquakez, yes, she passed away while in the hospital but the fundraising continued even after every possible bill was covered and I can assure you that many people were asking questions about where the money was going. Plus, there was never full disclosure about how much money had been donated by the Korean authorities in her area.

The greater point is that you can't believe everything you read on the internet, especially around Christmas time. Newbies may not know this and everyone should understand it before parting with their hard earned money.

Now, donate blood, if you can.

Look, there's something not right about what you've said both here and in your previous post. It's not a personal attack on you but I'm wondering why if you know so much you said in your first post about 'when she was on the plane to South Africa'.

You did NOT say in that first post that Narelle died. If you knew as much as you say here then you would have mentioned that. One of my best mates in Korea at the time lived down in Mokpo and he had hung out with her not long before her death. I believe his version of the story. I also heard it from other friends who lived down in Jeollanam at the time.

Why did you fail to write that she died? Sorry if this sounds rude but it looks like you did that to misrepresent what happened.

Another reason I hold to what I wrote is that I read for myself that no more donations were being required. The parents actually had somebody close to them posting that on various sites. If something wrong went on with lack of disclosure, then I certainly don't blame her family. And I think you're being unfair to her close friends who did their best to inform everybody in that horrible time for her family and friends as well as acquaintances.

As for the Mokpo police financial help, I'd be surprised if they wanted to put strings attached to how it was spent. The hospital bills were high and of course transporting a body back to South Africa isn't cheap. Koreans give money when somebody dies without demanding to know every itemised expenditure. I doubt that the Mokpo police were alleging improper use of the money.

Earthquaz, it sounds like you're looking at this emotionally, no offense. If you weren't here at the time then you probably don't know the whole story. The person/body on the plane. Same thing. No misrepensentation. Why did they not disclose how much money was donated by the Korean authorities and was there was fundraising even after all of the bills were paid? If you had been here and seen it happen you would know those questions came to the minds of many others, too. You're just angry with me for raising the issue but that's ok. Nothing was ever said by me about improper activity by the police.
Go ahead and take the word of other people. They may not know that part of the story, either. If you choose to believe everything you read on the internet then, again, that's up to you.

People do come together in Korea to help each other and that should never happen because someone wants to make money- don't you agree? People should be careful about who they donate money to and why- don't you agree? You can get angry at me for giving this advice to the many newbies out there but it needs to be said by someone with experience in Korea. Go ahead and kill the messenger- that's how the internet boards work, all too often.

Again, it's the broader issue of BE SMART. Tell people out there, in Korealand, to watch your money and be skeptical of online fundraising for causes.

Wylies is wrong, but so are you. You're projecting your hate of Koreans into the situation again. The guy was a drunk who dropped a lit cigarette on a couch. He wasn't some racist ajosshi ranting about foreigners.

Wylies, it's time you refreshed your memory about what happened and take off the tinfoil:

The Mopko police donated 16 million:

The ESL/Facebook crowd donated 800,000 won:

Once you have one you can never have enough.

Seriously, if you think three is a lot, you've somehow managed to overlook two folks, either with or who once had, gigantic sock drawers. Wink
