Why would it? Pointing out the hypocrisies of Korea-haters on these threads doesn't accomplish squat.
That's not to say you shouldn't speak your mind and point out some crap that goes on here. Might do some good. |
I would love to have been able to be on the show and speak Korean. When they said that foreigners are abusing the "maternal instincts" of Korean females I would rebuke "What about the 안마s that are all over the country? And the love motels? And the 노래바s? Seems to me that Korean men are far more abusive of the "maternal instincts" of Korean women."
But my Korean ability is very low and it seems the people with the ability to do this are happy collecting their cheques, making their podcasts, and selling their souls. |

Yes it's a kind of catch 22 situation. If you know enough Korean to argue against it, you're entrenched enough in Korean society to know it'll count against you. |

True. I was always taught to stick up for what is right though, so I guess that's why I never got anywhere in the world.
I'd still rather have no money and some dignity that be a sycophantic foreign gimp for Korean society and their prejudices. |

I'm just looking at the guy during the show and wondering what he must be thinking. All that time he spent building his career, learning Korean, being "accepted", and this is the thanks he is given. He has to sit there and explain some horribly produced video about a foreigner using lame pick up lines to have a one night stand with a Korean girl. If it was actually a carefully constructed argument that made valid points I could understand. Instead it was like some ridiculous skit made for a highschool class. It really makes me want to put effort into learning all about Korean culture and learning the Korean language. I can't think of a better way to spend my free time. Maybe then I will have the honor of watching a show like that and defending my fellow westerners. Seriously, what an honor, seriously. No....I mean seriously.
I think he is wrong in his podcast too. Korea does not have racism because it is homogenous. Korea is homogenous because it has racism. It is a country that has made a conscious effort to remain homogenous and free of other cultures. Korea is free to make that decision, but it shouldn't excuse ignorance. |
Well said. I listened to what he had to say in his podcast and he just seemed to be making the same tired excuses in the hope he will escape any criticism. |
"Maybe if I try really hard they will like me and accept me": Thinks Sam I am. "I would not criticize Korea on a TV show, I would not criticize it to others, I would not even criticize it if paid to": said Sam I am. "Nor would I eat Green Eggs and Kimchi. Not here, not there, or anywhere."
Ok, mocking sarcasm of this apologist aside. Makes me wish I could speak the langauge. First time some Koreans talked sh!t about us whiteys if I were on a TV show; I'd be pointing out all their hypocracy in Korean in all of it's unabashed blunt glory. No apologies coming from my lips. That'd shut them up real fast! |

korea haters usually hate korea because of personal experiences.
the people we see on these tv shows usually hate foreigners because they saw a news report about X on MBC (or because their mum told them to).
slight difference... |
I see. So one side an be explained with some perspective (they just had personal experiences) while the other side is presented as a granite block and without perspective (they just are that way because of what they saw).
Outstanding. |

That depends on each person I suppose. Some people are more pro-active while others tend to be more passive. Some may not have experienced anything bad in Korea while others may. This will of course color judgement and reaction.
Now, I do speak Korean and can write Korea too. I sent a letter to the station concerning this show (English copy and Korean copy). I did that many times in the past when I felt something was offensive or wrong.
Would I have gone on TV to mouth off about it? No idea but I do think you can make your point better and be far more impactful and effective when you do so calmy and methodically.
Finally, lots of long term expats/residents in Korea do a lot of work in their community and "represent" foreigners quite well through their actions and deeds. Perhaps such people, even if they do speak Korean, do not feel the need to explode every time some sensationalist grab piece report is aired?
Does that make such people "sycophantic foreign gimp for Korean society and their prejudices"? Lets be serious here...come on now. |

Good man. Is there any way you could make the letter available to the rest of us so that we could also send one and let our feelings be known?

Realistically our actions and deeds can only take us so far. Come the hour, cometh the man - the foreigner on this show had the chance to speak out against the xenophobic hate filled report he had just watched but he chose not to. Therefore I see him as a foreigner who is eager to please Korean society and is therefore used by Koreans for their own purposes/enjoyment, or a sycophantic foreign gimp. |

Maternal instincts? *beep* me, that is so deluded. Korean men know how to talk out of their butt sometimes. The girls tend to have daddy issues (and whose fault is that?), hence their need to latch on to guys so quickly. Oppa (sticks out bottom lip)..

I do stress that in spite of my being upset at this hypocritical double standard when it comes to us, there are, for the record, some decent average folks here, who are Korean. People, in my neighborhood, in some of my schools, out and about, etc who are nice enough. So, it's not a hate fest for Korea on my part. But, it is offence at made up or extremely exagerrated stories about us that are rarely disputed by folks here that upsets us all. There are good things about Korea that I do like. But, these stupid stories that are so over the top they'd be laughable if they didn't try to make others hate us. For westerners who come here for a short time, you instill in them a dislike for Korea that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives when they go back home.
What has been accomplished by all us foriegners being here in larger numbers over the last decade or more? Well, through osmosis, the level of English has gone up. Originally, Korean methods for learning English came from the Japanese. We all know how well they speak English. They suck. So, the Japanese method is no good. (Too much over emphasis on extreme grammar and very little on speaking and listening.) In spite of using this Japanese approach amongst many Korean English teachers, levels of English have gone up because of all us foriegners being here forcing the locals to communicate more and more in English. Fact is we do help Korea. Japan likes to be closed off and keep out foriegners by using "culture" as an excuse. Look how it works for them. Their English levels are low and their economy is no good because they use procedural tricks to block out the outside world. They use "respect Japanese culture" as an excuse to block any common sense change whatsoever or legitimate criticisms. So, the rest of the world passes them by and goes elsewhere. Is this what Koreans want for Korea? 우리 나라!!!! |

Basically the same message has been spouted as propoganda here for centuries-and still is in North korea.
The Korean race is essentially innocent and childlike and must be protected from devious outsiders by a strong leader. |

I'd say I found the general level of English in Japan to be about the same, if not a little higher than Korea. There are just as many English teachers living there as there are in Korea.
I'd also disagree with what you are saying. Outside of the idiotic black van right wing nationalists, a lot of Japanese are open to the outside world. They certainly don't want to "keep out foriegners" anymore than Korea does. Yes, their economy is pretty messed up in terms of debt levels, but they still have the third largest economy in the world. You are talking as if they are North Korea or something. |

I don't think that this kind of sensationalism is evidence of out and out racism, but rather a separatist notion of uniqueness. Koreans definitely do have an 'us and them' mentality, borne from ethnocentrism and the idea of 'one pure blood' nationalism.
Unfortunately, this kind of insular, culturally conservative mentality creates a self-fulfilling prophecy and the foreigners living here tend to come round to the same 'us and them' way of thinking.
The sad truth is that no matter how hard you try to integrate (learning the language, following the local customs etc), you will always be a waegukin and therefore judged by a different standard. |

The Korean public and media can keep on hating!
It hasn't stopped me from scoring with Korean birds. In fact, it has probably worked to my advantage.
Simply put, whenever you tell people not to do something they immediately want it. It's basic psychology 101.
Furthermore, these Korean males who complain look weak and insecure. This only helps us foreign guys more.
In addition, there are tons of weak-azz foreign guys here with weak-azz games, who try to learn fluent Korean in order to meet girls.
Just pathetic
So for the alpha-males here (both foreign and the non-hating domestic) its like shooting fish in a barrel. |
