I am teaching a couple of 12 y.o.'s who have very good speaking ability. One was born in America and left 3 years ago, the other is Korean born and bred but one of those kids who picked up the language very well and sounds like he is a gyopo kid. He's actually the smarter of the two.
Their parents want them to be taught with a book and have a discussion about the plot, characters, book reports, etc.
So far we read 'Hatchet' and are now almost done the sequel The River both by Gary Paulson.
I have never taught in this manner. We read several chapters a week and I came up with some reading comprehension questions about facts in the book as well as discussion questions where I ask for their opinion. Mixed results.
The River is almost done and I'm asked to find another book. I'm thinking of some kind of anthology so I don' t have to keep finding a new book every few weeks. I'm considering Norton's Anthology on Short Fiction.
I remember the Norton books from my school days. Anyone recommend it? Or another anthology that I can use? They speak almost perfect Engish, just a few errors here and there. They understand perfectly and have a fairly large vocabulary.
Any ideas? |
