I've been in Korea since Nov. 2007 and lived in Chilgok from March 2010 to March 2012.

From my experience:

South Korea is 98% the same, 1% is RELATIVELY better and 1% is RELATIVELY worse, Chilgok puts you in the 98%.

No disrespect nor humor intended.

Good luck.

I lived there 09-10. It is nothing exciting. I'm sure some has changed since I was there, but when I was there we had a Home Plus and a movie theater and some Korean restaurants. Not much western food. There are a couple bars where foreigners hang out. When I left in 2010 there seemed to be more foreigers than when I got there.

There's no subway line so getting to downtown Daegu meant waiting for the bus. And depending on where you live, the bus stop could be a 20 min walk (it was for me, I lived on the northern edge of a rice paddy so it took a long time for me to get anywhere). On the plus side, there are mountains with trails nearby and the big rice paddy at the north where I lived is lovely to walk through when the weather is nice. It felt like an escape when Korea got overwhelming because it was very peaceful.
