Wow, people actually pay to jog with a group? I guess it's that crossfit mentality. |

Hi Buddy
Yea..they get personal group training, if you like.
Loadsa close attention to safety and 'strength and
conditioning workouts' pre-designed for them. Plus
nutrition packs too. Its more than jogging fsure..
Crossfit guys in Hannam are a great pro bunch too - their
stuff is far more hardcore with equipment/weights etc. |

Gyms with treadmills, bikes and elliptical trainers are ten-a-penny. Literally, Koreans love gyms that are filled with machines. It's once you start looking for decent free weight equipment that you have problems. Heaven forbid you try looking for a gym with an olympic weight-lifting platform. |
That appears to be the case. I workout at a low-end cheapo place because they have "old school" stuff like olympic barbells, dumbbells, lots of benches, v-bar, etc.
This morning we toured the fancy place next door -- entire room full of expensive pointless machines that don't do jack...because Koreans think it's "modern". All they had was a Smith (cheater) machine, no olympics barbells, no rack, no dip bar, no chin-up bar. Double the price, half the muscle. Walked out.
I'd also like to rant about the use of cranked up K-pop in these joints. A serious gym should have no music. You need to be focused and you need to listen to your body. Silence please. Besides, music is highly personal, don't force that noise on customers. It serves no purpose but to distract people from the task at hand. It's not a club, it's a gym. Thank you.
Edit -- damn, this thread is ancient! |

1) Running outside is free.
2) Gyms with free weights are generally cheaper than ones using a Nautilus system.
3) If you don't like the music at those "health clubs", just listen to your own music. |

That works sometimes, but some gyms in this country play the music so loud that I'd need noise-canceling headphones to hear my music. At one gym in particular I went to that did this (back in 2007), anytime I asked them to turn it down, they'd say, "If we do, people will complain." My reply of, "Well, I'm complaining now. Can you please turn it down?" fell on deaf ears. |

I go to Park61 in Gangnam for those of you working close by. There aren't too many gyms around here (I wanted somewhere I could walk to within 5 minutes). It is kind of pricey but they have all the lifting equipment I needed (bench/squat/pull-up bar/free weights). |
