Pretty shocking.
Talking to my students (uni age) they never seem happy. That could just be the language barrier. They just seem to have pressure, heaped upon pressure.
People talk about the over use of anti depressants in the West and it certainly is a major problem. But looking at the decline of suicide in many of those same countries since 1990 points to at least some good coming from them.. Of course that can be explained with other things too. Access and acceptance of therapy..
From what i understand both of those things are difficult to find in Korea.
Then there are the other facets of Korean culture. And the ridiculous fantasy lives portrayed in dramas etc.. |

You have to admit it is a crisis. And this is a board about Korea..
I'm sure expat forums in the US discuss gun crime etc. |

last year after those girls got drunk and topped themselves off the side of the building they were in, i read that there are over 8000, yes thats right, 8000 suicide web sites in korea where you can meet, share ideas or exchange recipes.
thats pretty alarming. |

I'm not buying it. I heard that Koreans suicide in separate beds. It's another thread right here on this board. |

maybe its true, maybe it isnt...

the old guys in the grey track jackets lfrom the 60s'70s lose power, it may change, Byt then again, it seems the young men are still trying to be Pious sons, following their fathers examples. Thus, the educated girls arent marrying these boys.
I could go on, but after 13 years here, I know that "face" is most important and foreigners are still "under" the average Korean, I wont offer advice. I will make money though... |

Sure, a very social tight-knit society, little room for the individual, no creativity -- some people will snap.
And then you have the United States which is the opposite and almost everyone snaps.
Point -- don't naively think one problem can be cured without three other problems springing up in its place.
And by the way stop complaining on the internet about Korea people, if you don't like it why are you here? Get lost. |

Have a look at the increase. The highest in the OECD by some way and the highest female rate in the world bar none.
People offing themselves at record rates is a crisis in my opinion and it speaks to the social problems that are ignored here. If you can't see that then you are more moronic than I thought.
Coming from a family that endured a suicide, I can tell you that it rips families apart and causes utter heartbreak, especially when the person is young.
So yes, I'll stick with crisis as my term to describe the situation. |

This society, as it is, is committing its own suicide. Few children are being born, and it is a direct result of Korean culture (and what it has done to families).
Korea is disappearing as a culture, and it is their own doing. |

I'm aware that people have been saying this about Japan and Korea for a while now, but how long would it theoretically take for a country to no longer exist? It's just a funny concept to me. I read an interesting article about Japan in the Economist a few years ago but I guess I forgot what it said.
I would figure they would start some sort of social engineering program but those don't really work either. Isn't that where China screwed up? And now they have like 50 million more men than women, which is insane. I don't know if anyone caught the HBO VICE thing on China, but it was pretty ridiculous. They had this social get together going where all the mothers of men walked around a park with their son's "resume" around their neck looking for women for them to marry. Meanwhile, rich dudes literally pay to put their faces and phone numbers on billboards and amass a harem of chicks straight up advertising for some cooch lol. Gotta love the craziness. |
