The No Reservations fans here might know that Bourdain went to CNN this year. Just watched his new show, Parts Unknown, and the second episode was on Korea Town in Los Angeles. First episode was on Myanmar.
It was interesting to hear about the 1990 L.A. riots and how the city just let Korea Town burn to the ground. The Koreans took up arms and stood on their roof tops to protect their homes and businesses.
Anyone else here think that Bourdain's finally sold himself out and is milking this thing for all it's worth? I always took him for more of a radical, existentialist type that would never go mainstream like this.
Anyone interested can check out a clip of the show here.

How is moving to CNN a sell-out move? It's the same show, just on a different channel.
If you get headhunted and offered a position at a higher pay, I'm guessing 99% of us would take it. |

| Bourdain is such a phoney, I realized that years ago. I know he has a cult following but come on... that dude's a fake sleaze bag. Radical and existential, psf-f-f-f-f... that's existential echo of my fart upon reading those words. Bourdain is a phoney douche. |

I liked the Layover, particularly the Dublin episode. The Seattle episode was good, also. He went to Taipei, Taiwan just before Dublin and his reactions to the two places were completely different. As he was leaving Taiwan his attitude seemed to be, "I guess I'd come back here again...maybe." But he wasn't happy about leaving Dublin, though. He looked pretty hammered in some of the pub scenes they filmed. |

The LA riots were in 1992, not 1990. I distinctly remember when it started because the finale of the Cosby Show aired the next day (April 30th). I hadn't watched the sitcom in a while, but I was looking forward to seeing how the it would end. Instead, I watched the live news report of the riots.
The armed Korean shopkeepers is one of the first things I'm reminded when I think of those riots.
Just Google "Korean shopkeepers LA riots".

Interesting. I didn't know that but wondered why Guinness was pixled out of all of the scenes in Dublin when he went there. Even though he loves Guinness, he doesn't promote it or any other product on his shows. So I guess they parted on bad terms.
I read he's worth about 6 or 7 million dollars now and has money. I wonder what CNN is paying him, I bet he's doing well. |

| The guy had a Fox sitcom based on his book, yet now he's a sellout? He's never claimed to be anything but. |

I watched the episode on Burma. It was really interesting, and he talked to a lot of locals. The food looked better than in Korea.
I didn't see the Koreatown episode, but my question was why he didn't do an episode in Korea? |

Because I guess he wanted to do something a little different.
I.E how the food has adapted with immigration. The mixing of cultures etc.
I found it pretty interesting. |

His show NO RESERVATIONS did a Korean show. It was horrible. He kept mispronouncing words, and he was being guided around by a Korean-American who didn't actually know too much about Korea. It made me wonder how good his other episodes are at exposing the underground food cultures and local hot-spots. |

His next show will be in Colombia.
I think the Myanmar one was interesting.
He does like to drink so of course he wouldn`t want to leave Dublin. |

I tend to find that when programs like this go to cities that i know well, they are always disappointing. You expect them to tell you things you dont know. but they usually just do the usual
You are complaing about his pronunciation? People who have been here for ten years still struggle with the basics. |
