Dear all,
Firstly I want to premise this reaching out for advice on my acknowledgement that mine is a repetitive question here in the forum. That being the case, I've respectively searched back through user generated content but I seek a update - post what i believe have been sigificant Korean visa changes - before I soon commit to heading north to Seoul to find work. I've read conflicting advice in the past posts I've been able to locate, about what I'm about to ask - and simply, respectfully, seek an update - this being May, 2013.
Q:
Do I, having not held a Korean work visa previously, have to secure work before arriving into Seoul, or must I - as many other contributors state - be prepared to return to Canberra or Sydney for visa issuance?
As quite a mature-age graduate, only with a recent BA (ECE) I'll pass on my thanks, from one of the newest members to deslc, about to fly.

Short answer is no, you do not need to return to Aus to secure a visa.
Longer answer is:
IF you are prepared to forgo the price of your airplane ticket to Korea you can arrive in Seoul to begin your job search. Your potential new employer will NOT likely pay for your flight in (since they will need to pay for a visa run).
You will also incur significant costs during your job search (1-4 weeks in a hotel, acquisition of a phone and job search costs).
AFTER you secure employment your employer SHOULD pay for your trip to Japan to secure a new E2 visa. (Visa run to Osaka is most likely). This is a 2-day trip PROVIDED you arrive in Osaka on a M,T,W,TH and none of the days are a holiday in Korea or Japan. (visa processing is overnight and there is no "rush service").
Also be aware that if you are an older male with a degree in ECE (Early Childhood Education) you will face both ageism and gender bias against you.

| Also, I'm not if the regulations have changed or not (they seem to be very fluid here), but if you have never had a Korean visa before, you would have to get it from the Korean Consulate in your home country. Visa runs to Japan (in my experience) are only a possibility after your first visa has expired. |

The requirement for consular interviews in your home country were dropped in 2010 (provided you don't have an immigration black mark on your file).
Visa runs to Korean consulates in Japan are fine for 1st visas (as are applications made at any other Korean consulate).
