| Now that you know Korean, you can become a Korean teacher. That could be a decent option. |

True, but many Korean coworkers are toxic passive aggressive types.
I've never met such an adversarial people in my life. The hostility is less direct than with westerners, but no less potent. |

There are serial killers everywhere but aren't you most likely to find serial killers in America? So, wouldn't American teachers be the most likely types?
Also, the Korea is full of nutters line is true. We are all a little off I suppose. Some are ecletic but interestingly ecletic or quirky or whatever...others? Well, we all have seen the ones who we are sure they came here because they were outcasts back home.
Also, there are a few folks who never had any sort of power and get in a classroom and get power mad. Their classrooms are their own little fiefdoms and they run it as if they are Severus Snape. |

Recently I read the book "The Psycopath Test" by Jon Ronson.
I have had a few different jobs in Korea and my co-workers were a very mixed group. However my six months at a kindy hagwon in Gangnam seemed to attract a real toxic group. I personally took the job because I wanted to work day shift and because I thought that it would be a legit. teaching job (without getting into detail it was the least legit. teaching job that I have ever had in Korea).
Of course giving someone the label of being a psycopath is serious. Having said that I consider 2 of my former co-workers (both native teachers) to be highly likely to be psycopaths. I don't want to get into detail, but they had both worked there for some time and were quite proud of the power that they had and that they had the power to ruin people in the workplace as sport.
In the book "The Psycopath Test" Ronson notes that within the UK prison system that the great majority of the psycopaths are in London prisons and that the prisons in Scotland have significantly less psycopaths. This is because psycopaths are attracted to the glitz of the big city/London.
A thought: does the same apply to those who live/want to live in Gangnam.
I would NEVER take a job in Gangnam again (not at a kindy at least) after my experience there.
Any stories/thoughts????
Is my experience representative or just random bad luck???
Thanks!!! |
"Toxic" is different from psychopathic. Very.
If you ever met a real psychpath or sociopath, your head would be spinning for years. Their manipulations are so deep and bewildering and perfectly, brilliantly blindsiding that you often don't even realize who you were actually dealing with until long after they are out of your life.
Those people you described sound opportunistic, maybe grossly opportunistic with Machiavellian personal style. But do you really think you can read a pop psychology book and suddenly have insight into who merits the label 'psychopath'
I have heard other teachers in Korea talking about this book. It seems to be making the rounds in some circles. Well just remember, when you point a finger at someone else, there are four.... (you surely know the rest....) |

Incredible how you managed to turn my post into something anti-Korean... since I'm pretty sure Koreans weren't mentioned in any way whatsoever. |
