My Korean friend is going to Canada on a working holiday visa. As i've never been to Canada, could Canadians please tell me if Korean cell phones will work in Canada? Can a Canadian sim card be easily purchased and put into a korean phone?
I use a cheap 'pay as you' go Korean phone in Korea. I bought it second hand in Itaewon for very cheap. Are the Canadian equivalents just as cheap? My friend wants to get a phone within the first few days of arriving in order to look for employment and housing.

Sorry for all the questions. Thanks. Any advice would be good.

I went back to Canada in the fall and got prepaid time/SIM card at Roger's on my Samsung cell that I purchased and use in Shanghai. Also bought a battery charger there.

If he/she has a smartphone, it'll work on roaming (but it'll be somewhat expensive depending on the provider and the package).

It should be easy to get a cheaper pay per use phone...a few years ago, you could get them at convenience stores. Canada gets a lot of foreign workers, so most of the service providers should have some cheaper plan options available.

Tell your friend to check the Rogers or Telus websites for a start and see what they have.

My iPhone 4 was unlocked here in Korea... used it in Canada with a pre-paid SIM purchased through Bell.

I have a knock-off smart phone and I just bought a SIM from the TELUS store.
Worked fine for voice and sms. Data service sucked but I think that was more about location (rural Alberta) than the phone.
