Oh wait no nevermind that was too complex.

It's a symbolic position that is used to represent Korean people and culture to foreigners. Plenty of Americans won't care either way, but it's offensive to a lot of us. Go ahead and say we are being crazy, but let's look at some other examples.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Seungjun_Yoo - A Korean American who was deported for not fulfilling his military service. He was at the peak of his musical career. He begged for forgiveness from the Korean people but nobody cared.

http://blog.mtvasia.com/2009/09/08/2pms-park-jae-beom-quits-leaves-boyband/ - Park Jae Bom who was also at the peak of his career as the leader of 2pm, left Korea because of comments he made on his myspace page 5 years before his career started. He eventually became popular again but only through youtube. JYP fired him.

Now you have PSY who has hurled racial slurs and claimed he wants to torture American children. His newest video shows the worst aspects of Korean culture. He also dodged his initial military service. The whole incident has been swept under the rug. Anyone with an 8th grade reading level knows that his apology was not sincere at all. The response is to use him to encourage foreigners to come to Korea for binge drinking and clubbing. Hey, maybe Seoul can become the new Mardi Gras.

I'm not sure how you can defend this move. I'm not writing letters to any companies here, but I will point out how ridiculous and classless the move is. It's their call but don't be surprised when this eventually gives Korea a bad image. It's a move that lacks class.

And again if any of you don't think this is a big deal than why do you feel the need to come here and post?

Yes, by all means come to Korea for clubbing...but if you talk to any Korean women at the club I'll have to go into another anti-foreigner rant. Maybe write another song about it.Confused

As for PatrickinBusan, ignore him. He's the guy who complained that we try to "lock out Korea' when we are at home. Yet he posts from the comfort of Canada. He not only locked Korea out, he got the hell out of Dodge. Yet he has the arrogance to tell us how to interact with the place we (not him) have to engage with every day.

His opinion on matters Korean aren't worth tuppence. Ignore him.

Actually, not just for that but a variety of reasons, foreign tourists going into Korean clubs might be some of the worst PR for Korea.

On the other hand, if there were just enough tourists in the clubs, maybe the locals and staff would switch into "friendly happy Korea PR mode", so as not to put their country into a bad light, and the vibe might actually be "friendlier" (fake, but friendlier). Might reduce the mean glares and shoulder bumps. Who knows? Laughing

In Psy's defense his calling for torture was likely as sincere as his apology. In other words, nothing more than a shameless attempt to sell records. Does anyone really picture him having the sand to declare guerrilla war on the US?

They should put the guy who directed Old Boy in charge. Or What's His Face from GI Joe or What's Her Face from Lost.

Yeah I agree it was just a shameless publicity stunt. And in defense of the general Korean netizens most of them called him out for that on the comment section of the news articles about his apology. I don't think they would catch on to how half hearted his apology was because it was written in English too. Either way, I don't see how that whole situation would lead someone to choose him as tourism ambassador.

Hey look, another bash thread!

Great fun, it had been a while, like 5 minutes since one of these popped on the boards!

Great to see the thread sliding from its initial post and into a more general "lets vent about anything we dislike about Korea" fest.

Always good for a fun read.

Oh and tourism ambassador....you guys realize this is not a real "ambassador" position right? You do realize it is just fluff marketing to boost tourism right?

Oh wait no never mind that was too complex.

Symbolic or not, the government messed up by appointing a thing that calls for the murder of a huge percentage of a nation's population. How'd you like it if he urged Koreans to murder Canadians?

One should hope that you really were not a teacher because a teacher is supposed to be a good role model. Shame on you.

If Arnold Schwarzenegger was made ambassador to Russia, and made some comments back in the 80s about "blowing up the Ruskies", I wouldn't care and I doubt anyone but the extreme Russian Right would.

It's like rappers who talked about shooting cops and 'bleep' white people who now have gone commercial. I know not to take their comments too seriously.
