| Have the Koreatown episode on as I type this...one of the main Korean-American guys Bourdain spends time with has said at least 3 times that he would never ever marry a Korean woman, and would advise that in the off chance a western woman was attracted to an Asian man, that she go for a Chinese guy, definitely not a Korean. Funny! |

David Choe is about as unstereotypically (Is that a word?) Korean as you can get. Funny guy. Check his "Thumbs Up" stuff he did for Vice. The hitchhiking across China one is hilarious.
As far as Bourdain, I love the guy....watch all his shows....A Cooks Tour, No Reservations, The Layover etc. They're all pretty similar in my mind, although a few of the No Res eps. got a little too artsy fartsy and pretentious for me.
Parts Unknown is beautifully filmed. Much "prettier" than any of his other shows. Next episodes are Canada and then Morocco. |

His show NO RESERVATIONS did a Korean show. It was horrible. He kept mispronouncing words, and he was being guided around by a Korean-American who didn't actually know too much about Korea. It made me wonder how good his other episodes are at exposing the underground food cultures and local hot-spots. |
I tend to find that when programs like this go to cities that i know well, they are always disappointing. You expect them to tell you things you dont know. but they usually just do the usual

I saw his Korean episode and although I don't think it was his best, I liked it. Did I learn a lot about Korea? No, but I didn't expect to learn anything. He didn't claim to be an expert about Korea and did not keep experts as companions. He traveled with one of his friends who left Korea when she was 7 and was just tagging along for a trip down memory lane. I enjoyed it, because like any good travel genre,it was more about the protagonist (Bourdain and his passion for food) than the place. |

The Korea episode was great because he got mad at his colleague/guide. First time I've ever seen him kinda snap at someone. |

I'm pretty sure that the korean who guided Anthony in the Korea episode was one of his producers.
It was a decent episode. I'm pretty sure he ate bosingtang near the end, and called it a mystery meat stew. but it was never explicitly stated to be dog. |

I don't understand how he's a sellout? Getting paid to show people places and cultures that most wouldn't even consider visiting with knowledgeable locals is all good to me.
I think his opinion and thoughts are well thought out and makes for an interesting show where people want to learn/explore more because of it.
i.e. LA Riots and how Korea Town was left to burn to the ground while Rodeo Drive went untouched
CNN does a nice job of capturing some beautiful sights better than on the Travel Channel as well |

After residuals he'll earn many multiples of that.
I enjoyed No Reservations and The Layover very much. I appreciate his style, even though he comes across as affected.
The latest episode of his new show on CNN had him in Colombia. He seemed completely uninspired and over the whole thing. Maybe just an off week (and maybe Colombia is uninspiring [it is]). I got the impression he's bored. The Myanmar episode was great. |

What do you mean by, "He comes across as affected"? He's been doing this since about 2000 or 2001 with A Cook's Tour and he's been to a shit load of places over the last 15 years. I'm sure it's a lot of travelling and takes its toll.
Bourdain has explicitly stated that he's going to milk this TV gig for all it's worth. He was a guy who, at 44, had never been anywhere except the inside of a kitchen and was addicted to cocaine, heroin and methadone in his 20s and 30s. He's done pretty good if he has nearly 10 million dollars in the bank, a successful TV show on CNN and been everywhere in the world.
I think those episodes of No Reservations that you mention as being artsy and pretentious are because he's a literary and film enthusiast and likes to pay homage to books and movies he admires. I've also thought he's relatively thin for a guy who eats and drinks booze for a living. |

He's a celebrity now. He's more careful about what he says. |
