I see facebook photos of people who return home and within 5 or 6 months they look very good and healthy?

Anybody feel they are aging quickly? Surprised

Aged in dog years here. It has taken a huge toll on my body I think although I wonder if it would have been this bad had I been back home. At least medical treatment I know would have been better.

I have heard this kind of story often. What can you expect from a society where collectively suffering from high-level of work stress is a positive thing and a norm?

For me, I don't think this has happened..
Maybe I've been lucky enough to be blessed with good genes but overall I haven't aged much and not changed my physical appearance to the negative since I first arrived here (back around 8 years ago or more at this stage)
I'd argue that if anything I have aged more slowly here.

I think it's a case of different strokes for different folks.
Many who come here end up binge drinking more, others smoke much more. Others are less active here.

It's about more than just the fact we are in Korea.
It is a lot easier to live less healthy here and maybe most of us are guilty of that. Our jobs here too and the stress or lack of etc will have a big bearing as well as our social lives. So much to factor in. Our appearance and bodies are going to take a hit. I think it's more related to our personal choices here than just being victims to the environment..

I know of a good few people here who've said- oh teaching here in Korea is so unstressful compared to back home and had they stayed at home there would have been more pressure to settle down etc quickly and just perhaps been more miserable overall. If that's not aging- I'm not sure what is ..

There is a huge freedom here- ( even if you've married here) lack of constraints etc..
There is no reason for us to age here quicker than back home I think!

Maybe the pollution (air pollution, etc.) can age people.

I have a Benjamin button thing going on since I've been in Korea.

I attribute it to bb cream.

Of course not. People are just starting to scrape the barrel looking for reasons why Korea is terrible...

If you drink more, and eat unhealthy food more, you're gonna get yourself into a state. There's 70 year old men out there who are bodybuilders for gods sake; you just gotta take care of yourself.

Your appearance is a result of 'you', not anything else.

Thats prob the main reason.

I like Korea,( well enough to stay another year) but Ive noticed that the stress and hurry hurry attitude as sorta affected me.

I think its the stress of always being a foreigner, the food, drinking, and just being away from home possibly. I didnt realize that everywhere I go theres always that bit of stress of being stared at and just overall not being able to speak the language.

But it seems like when I see my friends back home 4 months later they look great. Cool

I'm a easy going and usually jolly person, but a work place full of sad and miserable people gave me a few grey hair that I never had. I hope my grey hair will subside when I leave Korea in a few months.

I've definitely aged...but I've been here almost 4 years so I think I would have aged similarly in the States had I stayed there. I did get a ton more gray hair living here which may or may not be coincidental. If work-related stress causes gray hair, then there you have it.

I should say I USED to get stressed. . .

Now I don't even try (or try half-heatedly) to make bad kids sit down and be quiet and yell and raise my blood pressure. I ignore them and talk in a normal voice to everyone as I teach. Before I would feel bad taking the mother's money and not give 1000% to try to make her son/daughter learn, but if her kid is constantly disrupting my class, she has him to blame -- not me. I teach now to kids who want to learn and the others can do what they want.

This mindset has truly made my stress subside dramatically. The hardest part was convincing myself not to feel guilty ignoring the bad kids and taking their parent's money. Now I look at it like I'm a hired babysitter and the kid can learn by osmosis. I'm through with vein-popping yelling at bad kids which have zero effect and who do what they want anyway.

I was 23 and looked 17 when I first moved to Korea.

I was 25 and looked 17 when I left.

I'm 27 and I still look 17.

Apparently substance abuse is good for me.

Doctor says to patient, "I have some good news and some bad news."
Patient says, "What's the bad news?"

Doctor, " At your age, you are going to start showing signs of aging...winkles on your face, around your eyes and things like that."

Patient, "Damn, I was afraid of that." "But what is the good news?"

Doctor," Your eyesight is going to get pretty bad too, so you won't be able to see the signs of aging very well." Wink

"i'll still love you when you get old, so please get older this".
