|
|
Walking down the seedy streets of Seoul on my way home, late at night and more than a little buzzed, a "Eureka" moment hit me. I figured out why there is so much prostitution in Korea. It is linked to the high alcohol consumption.
Did you know South Korea has the highest per capita alcohol consumption in Asia, and one of the highest in the world?
While intoxicated, my judgement and inhibition has been severely compromised, and I have made some stupid decisions I've regretted.
There have been times when my willpower just completely goes out the window. I will eat junk food (even though I'm supposed to be on a healthy diet) and I will end up smoking (even though I quit years ago). The next morning I bitterly regret that.
I think Korean men aren't saying to themselves, "Hey, I think I'll cheat on my wife tonight"; It is not premeditated.
But walking home tanked, they see the spinning barber poles, which are ever so alluring in this moment.
I think the next day many people regret having wasted money at a brothel, and what a waste it is. It makes me sad to think about what that $100 (or however much it was) could have bought for their family- books, clothes, food, etc.
술 is like a potion that transforms people from Dr. Jekyll to Mr. Hyde.
If alcohol consumption in Korea went down, incidences of prostitution would drop with it. |

No. Completely sober. I take it you apologist bros don't like what I typed and would rather the issue be swept under the rug than thoughtfully addressed? |

i think it relates to work culture. people work ridiculous hours and are then expected to get drunk with the boss. this isn't conducive to a happy married life at all. most of my korean friends who work in 'normal' companies tell me their wife is basically now just the mother of their children, a person they used to love but who they now don't see very often. they don't see their kids either - when they get home, the kids are in bed, and at the weekend, they're too tired to play with them.
so, the husband becomes lonely and miserable, whilst growing ever more distant from his wife and kids. The wife doesn't know the man she married any more, and focuses all her attention on her kids, particularly their education. The ajumma community around her is also telling her that this is the right thing to do.
if you're the husband, what do you do? you're lonely, your life is miserable and complicated, and of course, you still want to have sex. there's no chemistry with your wife any more, and finding a mistress is expensive and time consuming (and probably also makes you feel more guilty). plus all that drinking and overwork makes you fat and unattractive. going to a prostitute is a quick, discreet, and simple solution.. |

Nicely put. I teach predominantly married women and I certainly get the vibe you descibed from a lot of them. Don't know so much from the ajoshi's point of view |

Your hypothesis is an interesting one, but at this point it's just that: a hypothesis. Proving a theory requires evidence, not mere plausibility. If you want to test this, you or an academic studying the phenomenon could do surveys (though people lie). |

Take it however you like, mate. If calling me an apologist makes your post more precious to you, go for gold. I don't care.
But I'll repeat: rambling personal observations are what blogs were invented for. Or drinking at a bar. |

OP, there's some truth in your observation. But you're looking solely at what drives men to employ prostitutes. It makes equal sense to ask what drives women to get into prostitution.
When asked, prostitutes of course very often say they do it for the money. Many though also say they do it for the sex.
So you have women looking for sex, men looking for sex, and sex happening. With alcohol and money thrown in for good measure.
People having sex . . . where's the mystery? It's nature.
If I pay money to eat at a restaurant, is that morally wrong? Is it mysterious? Is food for money very, very different, really, from sex for money? |

Thoughtfully addressed? You've got to be kidding. You come across as a self-righteous, patronizing bore with an unhealthy fixation on prostitution. This isn't exactly the first thread you've started on the topic, is it? |

Seriously? Many prostitutes say they're doing it for the sex? I've never heard that before.
Now, I've never really studied the matter, so perhaps you are entirely correct. But this is shocking to me. Do you have some kind of proof? Has a poll been conducted?
I'm not trying to be an a**, but I always thought prostitutes were into it because of money, or "slavery". |

i think the OP is the biggest pile of bollocks ive ever read this week.
First up and last up, what youre saying is that youre a teenager.
You have no self control and obviously no empathy otherwise you woudnt think if you were in a relationship, your personal desires have priority over preserving said relationship. And you think everyone else must be like you.
There is no scientific evidence to prove that people have no control over what they do when theyre drunk - on the contrary, they use it as an excuse to justify their behaviour once theyve LOST THEIR INHIBITIONS.
So if you think all men would jeopardize a relationship just to sink their tool, youve got a lot of growing up to do. |

I've heard porn stars say this. I always assumed they were trying to justify it in their head. So they come up with an excuse that isn't money.
They should just legalize prostitution. |

I'd agree that the OP is too over-simplistic in its conclusion. It's not solely the alcohol consumption, obviously. I've had Korean girls tell me that they don't even care about the ideal of "love" in their marriage partner; they just want to be set up well and be secure, which is not unique to Korea whatsoever, though I'd say it's much more prevalent and open here. Many Korean women are insanely superficial and anyone who has gone to one of those 700,000-1 million won/night hook up clubs in Gangnam would be amazed and alarmed. At least 80 smoking hot girls who, I'm guessing, willingly entered the place and end up waiting around or getting dragged into a room with a few rich dudes and expensive liquor in it. A lot of them are just regular girls but they want that $ugar daddy. A lot of Korean girls are like that... I've been on a few dates where a Korean girl has asked or hinted at me buying something expensive for her, like a pair of shoes-- on the first or second date! That's when you have to walk away.
I've been taken to places where the girls admit they're just college students paying for school and I've met juicy bar girls who rake in money a few days a week for half the year then take a juicy trip to Europe. I've also known guys here whose wives would be "understanding" if they went out with their business friends and wound up banging a hooker, just because it's kind of the way that culture works if you're in the business world, which I admittedly am not a part of. But it's so open that it would make one often rightly assume that it's simply not as big of a deal here. Whatever your views are, you can't just narrow it down to alcohol consumption. It's part of the culture, and prostitution is not something you're going to stop. It doesn't matter what part of the world you're in, women love money and men love vaginas, so they will trade in those two areas as they always have. |
