It is really hard to tell if this is a fake or not. It could be this,

http://us.tagheuer.com/en/luxury-watches/tag-heuer-formula-1-watch#/en-luxury-watches-formula-1-chronograph42-mm-black-rubber-bracelet-cau1114-ft6024

If you register with the website I'll post below and look through the forum for "How to Spot a Fake Tag Heuer" they'll be able to tell you beyond a reasonable doubt whether or not it is a fake.

Here is the link:

http://forums.watchuseek.com/f25/how-spot-fake-tag-heuer-162024.html

I have two TAG's myself, one being a Formula 1 and, I haven't seen that color scheme before. Maybe the watch wasn't purchased in Korea.

Hey oldsurly, thanks for the reply. I will view it on Sunday and check for all the things listed on that forum. I will also want to have the receipt and photograph his ID card. As you can see on the ad, he bought it a month ago for US$1200 and wants to sell it now for US$500. That huge price drop concerns me. For it only being a month old he could probably get away with US$1000. On the other hand, I have been reading that replicas are so good now you could have it a lifetime and never know. Laughing

If its a fake he probably has many for sale as it's his livlihood. Send him another reply or two with different names and see if he is eager to sell to multiple buyers.

His addy is yaksu. There is an authorised TAG HEUER distributor near Galleria Dept in Apgujeong. Ask him to meet you there. They have numerous English speaking staff and they will tell you on the spot if it is legit. I have my watches serviced there. If you want the address and phone number let me know. If the guy makes excuses why he can't go even though he needs the cash you know then if it is a fake.

So, I am curious, what's the verdict? Did you buy it? Is it legit?

Very difficult to tell. The fakes usually have white date wheels which are totally wrong. This one has a black date wheel with white font, which looks correct. The texture of the dial looks right too. Cheap imitations usually have glossy plastic black dials. The box set looks real. The fake version of that box set has a cheap 'pleather' cushion, not the fabric one you see in the pictures. If it is real, the price is great. Without paperwork or documentation however, you will be hard pressed to re-sell it at a profit.

The market for used luxury goods in Korea is fairly limited, especially for men's watches. Most men simply receive watches as wedding gifts, but other than that, expensive watches aren't very high on their list of things to buy. A legitimate watch shop in Seoul would offer the guy between 25-33% of the new retail price for it. So if a new one is 1.3 million, a watch shop will probably offer him between 300,000krw and 400,000krw for it. He's trying to sell it on craigslist because he thinks a foreigner will probably give him more money than a shop will.

I thought that because F1 is the cheapest Tag line, that they wouldn't bother making replicas but a quick Google search would show otherwise.

Here's a guide on ebay that you can check out: http://www.ebay.co.uk/gds/SPOT-A-FAKE-TAG-HEUER-FORMULA-ONE-F1/10000000014005801/g.html

Where do you get your information from? I live in a Viet area and will be first to tell you that there are hundreds of people selling fake watches for full price. In LA you can then find all races doing it.

Very simply....have the seller meet you at a Tag Heuer store....they verify it..seller gets your money!
If seller does not want to..then you know the answer..fake.

OK, the deal has been done. I met the guy at Dunkin' Donuts at Yaksu Station. Turns out, and I verified this, he is a violinist with the Seoul Philharmonic. I also checked out his ARC. No problems. His wife bought him this watch from jomashop.com in Brooklyn, NY. I have the invoice. The serial number on the invoice and the watch match. I also saw his receipt from the Korean tax service where he had to pay duty. I brought a magnifying glass and thoroughly checked the watch. No problems. I checked that the buttons operated the chronograph, no problems. I checked the sapphire crystal and luminova, no problems.

Bottom line: Seems authentic, but the only way to check 100% is to take it to an authorized service center where they will disassemble it and verify.

So, I'm pretty happy with a month-old Tag for 500,000KRW.
