Did you hear this from a recruiter? Recruiters are fluent in complete and utter BS. Don't believe a word they tell ye! They're just trying to fill their worse openings.

Of course that is where I heard it, I am trying to find out if anyone else is hearing the same. The school in question has everything I want out of a job, the hours are fair, I have talked to former and current teachers who endorse it, location is great, etc etc.....

Recruiters do not offer jobs or have power over the conditions or terms of employment.

Employers do that.

All recruiters do is put you (the applicant) in contact with jobs (employers). It is then up to you to ask any questions you have to the potential employer as only he or she has factual and concrete information on employment conditions, including airfare.

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Thanks, that's the funniest thing I've read for a while.

July is the most difficult hiring time as people are either doing camps for 1 million a week or having a summer holiday. This will mean a lot of E2s will be pressured not to leave. If they said September 1st that would make sense. Unless only the desperate apply in July so they can screw them.

If you come to Korea on your own dollar you are crazy without an F-visa. With the tightening of the hagwon market, if you're stuffed over finding another job in Korea will be very difficult and you are owned by your visa holder.

At least in China when you're stuffed over you will have another job on the same day. Add to this China doesn't care about doing privates and cheap fruit it is the logical choice unless you're scared of a bit of pollution.

The job starting date is Sept 1st, so its not one of those quick fill deals. I am just trying to see if anyone else has heard of something like this happening.

Recruiter probably wants to use your return ticket, then he'll tell another guy that they don't provide the ticket to Korea and he'll have himself a nice round-trip.

They're just trying to screw you out of a million won.

Always remeber this. Recruiters are not your friend. They have no interest in your welfare. Their interest is getting you placed (even in a hellhole) and get their payment. They make hogwan owners and used car salesmen seem like genuine folk.

I just spoke with a YBM Pine HR person. He said the same about the Hagwon association agreeing to stop paying airfare, starting August or September. Who knows if this will happen. YBM Pine (PSA, Apple Tree - the little babies) is not offering airfare home. Which has made me reconsider.

Wise business move in their part.

Flooded market, why pay more than you have to?

Association? They all collude together? You'd think this crap would be illegal, since they bitch about Chaebols so much here. Anti trust and collusion are extremely illegal back home in order to encourage competition. What a pile of crap. Give them the finger and go to China, unless it's just one place in Korea doing this.

I do agree. Sometimes it is business and it is a way to save money. If people accept they accept. The ironic/stupid part is many of the business never thinks of the consequences.

Ok schools do not offer the plane ticket back. Teacher stays at cruddy school for 8 months, finally has enough. Waiting out the four months left for severance and plane ticket/bonus, whoops just severance. So for four months more of hell the teacher gets to spend that severance money or most it for a plane ticket home. Expect people find leaving schools much easier.

Or economy in the west gets better. Market gets less flooded and schools are surprised that are not taking their offers. "Why should we offer a plane ticket back?", they will whine. Expecting people to accept the cruddy offers because it was once common to accept cruddy offers.

Will need to keep an eye out on this.

I had originally not expected the downturn to last this long. But, there will eventually be some type of recovery. Add to that, Japan hiring more public school teachers and Chinese hogwans offering more money every year. Either way, Korea will be screwed if they keep this nonsense up. Hogwans are already saving money by paying what they paid 10 years ago.
