Back in the mid/late 1990's there was a blues bar in Itaewon with a smokin' blues guitarist. What ever came of that place/that guy?

He's the guy you saw around the same time that I did in 1995. He even threw his guitar down and stormed offstage at Just Blues at the end of a blistering rendition of Voodoo Chile...I assumed that he was pissed off with his girlfriend, or someone else. Copy and paste this url: hompi.sogang.ac.kr/glass/Music/blues.html

Cheers.

Chai left and went to Hong Kiong for a few years, but now he is back. There is a new "Just Blues" bar located in Gangnam (with Gangnam prices).

He can still rock.

Back in '95/'96 I spent many nights in his bar. His band (Chai and Friends) was always changing but the best lineup I saw had an American guy on harp and a Korean keyboardist on a Hammond with a Leslie cabinet. They rocked!

Web site for new bar (it looks just like the old one)

Age has mellowed Chai a little bit Smile I've always thought he had a bit of an Eric Clapton complex more than Hendrix, IMHO.

Aw man...That's too bad. It's one of the only reasons to bother going to Seoul Sad

I played the itaewon place a few times ages ago, like 2002 or so. They complained I was too swampy (ran a vintage fuzzwah and a uni vibe), they just wanted Clapton-like players then.

I was playing one of the few nights I did with them, standing there with my vintage Gretsch guitar, being all awkward and this tall, lovely thing with long flowing curls got on stage from the audience and said to me "youre very handsome!" and I shot back, without thinking "you, too".

Never even noticed her before that. We dated for quite a while. She grew up in Itaewon, her dad was an ex-vet (and I think a gangster) and he always liked me, always wanted to arm wrestle me, and if I won or lost, he'd still buy me a shot.Good memories.

Good memories indeed.
