I'm thinking of buying an e-book reader. I need one that will give me no problems in Korea. Criteria such as:

-price
-availability
-English menu
-service
-able to view multiple formats
-no restrictions (like I need to join I-Tunes as with an Ipod)

A friend gave me about 7,000 e-books and I'm tired of using my phone to read them.

if its a must to buy in korea, why dont you try using a tablett? I bought my ipad to use as an ebook reader and its surprisingly good. my gf has a galaxy and its ok too. i downloaded all my ebooks from torrents. i have about 100,000 at home and transfered the ones i use (including comics, encyclopedias etc. ) without any problems.

edit - oh i forgot, i also have apps that allow me to download newspapers in english and foreign languages as well as comic books and language packs.

I wasn't planning on spending over about 150,000 won.

ah, ok.
last time i saw an ebook reader (new) here it was about 350,000. id either get a mate to get one from ebay second hand or else keep your eyes peeled on flea market pages (such as deagus flea market and craigslist etc.).

150,000 Won is a harsh limit but I would also recommend to get an Android based tablet, 7'' is a perfect format for e-books. I bought a Nexus 7 (comes in 16 and 32 GB, I recommend the latter) and everything is just so much more readable than on my Galaxy-S 3.

Price point is around $300, unfortunately, but since you'll have more than twice the fun than with a mere e-book reader, might well be worth the extra expense.

Nexus 7 is manufactured by ASUS, so you can also escape the Samsung death loop for a moment.

basic kindles ship internationally from amazon in around 5 days and work fine here, basic one though with shipping and customs may run you $120 or so. if you use a us credit card and us billing address you can get most books from amazon

eReaders are fairly inexpensive and you should have no trouble finding one within your price range (this excludes tablets, though).

I recently bought a Kindle Paperwhite and I highly reccommend it. However, I don't know if you can add books that aren't purchased through Amazon, but I wouldn't be surprised if there is some way around it.

Since you don't plan to purchase books you might consider paying a little more and getting a tablet. The money you save by being able to download books for free should make up for the added cost of the tablet. Plus the tablet is more versatile. The downside is that for some people it is uncomfortable to spend long periods of time looking at a tablet screen. The backlighting can give some people (like me) a headache.

If you do go for a tablet, I'd suggest an iPad mini. If you go for an ereader, I'd suggest a Kindle Paperwhite.

The Paperwhite was my first Ereader, and I must say it is amazing. Never had a Kindle Fire or anything else to compare it to, but when it became available five months ago, I was on the waiting list. Very satisfied with the ease on my eyes.

Yeah you can download non amazon books to a kindle, I do it all the time, just plug it in to your computer, it will appear to be like another storage device and transfer stuff that way. demonoid used to be great for finding books. If its not in .mobi format just download Calibre and it will convert .epub to .mobi no problem

Banshee comes with I think all Linux platforms. Never had to use iTunes once with my iPod.

I'd go for the Kindle Paperwhite if I were you. You can get off gmarket, maybe 30 bucks more than if you'd have ordered it from Amazon.

Not sure if it would apply to your interests, but the Nook HD and HD+ are now, as of May, working with the Google Play store. That means their functionality is greatly increased, and they are no longer a somewhat closed platform. I believe you are able to load the Kindle materials on them via apps now.

They are certainly priced well overseas, and have the best screen for the price.

I just bought a basic Kindle 4 (I'm still in the US) for $69. I've recently acquired around 10,000 ebooks, which should keep me busy for some time while I'm in Korea!

Here's a link for internationally shipped Kindle ($89).

http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Ink-Display-Wi-Fi-international/dp/B007HCCOD0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1369958384&sr=8-1&keywords=kindle+international

These should be the easiest on your eyes, if you're a sensitive type like myself. The Paperwhite version (as well as the HD Tablets) is also reported to have a greater strain than the regular Kindle.
If you JUST want an e-reader, then this is your answer. If you want to have a multimedia conundrum, then you're definitely better off with an IPAD, Fire HD and the likes....
