Stage, film, and television actress Jean Stapleton, best known for her role as Archie Bunkers devoted wife Edith on All in the Family, died on June 1 at her home in New York City. She was 90.

I'm biased, since All In The Family was my favorite sitcom. But it's hard to deny the talent and energy she put into the role. Also, not having seen her in a lot of other stuff, or seen her interviewed out of character, it's hard to imagine her as anyone but Edith.
That said, she was good in Michael, playing an elderly woman who hosts an angel come down to earth. Never saw her portrayal of Mrs. Roosevelt on TV, but did catch her in some other M4TV thing about a disabled woman coaching a baseball team. I think I choked up when one of the rival team members yelled abuse at her. She did take well to sympathetic roles.

TV was gold back then. All in the Family, Mary Tyler Moore, Good Times, Sanford & Son, The Jeffersons, The Odd Couple. Somehow, when you watch shows, especially ones like All in the Family, they seem more edgy in a weird way and oddly better at dealing with certain prejudices. |
