Psy became the new face of Korea tourism in a series of new TV commercials promoting Korean culture to a global audience.

The 15-second TV commercials started airing Monday on major TV networks in places with the highest numbers of visitors to Korea, such as Japan, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan, as well as global TV channels, including CNN, Discovery and National Geographic. The commercials are also available to watch on YouTube and Facebook.

Quote:
Psy is a cultural icon now. No one has ever made such a huge impact as Psy, said Lee Charm, CEO of The Korea Tourism Organization, at a press conference on the release of the commercials on Monday.

We expect to see much exposure that Psy can bring to the new commercial, said Lee.

Each of the six different episodes of the commercial features a unique concept of Korean culture and a scene that symbolizes the concept.

I quite like the third video in the series which features Korean drinking culture and brothels - it has a happy ending Smile

Psy can't remedy the problems of tourism in Korea, which are 1) high prices; 2) difficulty of navigating through the country if you don't speak Korean; 3) Koreans pushing things that they WANT foreign tourists to like instead of the things the latter really like; 4) pricey hotels and not enough mid-priced ones; 5) K-slop and Psy are short-term phenomena; 6) poor promotion of beaches and other nature preserves; and 7) dishonest merchants who cheat tourists.

No one ever? Laughing

Still can't believe they are using this guy as the face of their country. Full on gimmick mode. Plus what if he suddenly falls out of favor? (Which is what is happening already for those with any decent taste...)

You gotta say who has made more cultural impact than Psy. If you don't then you just took a cheap shot. So, IYHO who is more a cultural icon then Kim Jung Eun's Evil twin brother Psy?

Eh, Kim Yun Ah will still be admired and respected after the world forgets about PSY. Winter Olympics are coming to Korea too, the timing would be fine. She is probably too busy though.

Is he going to talk about how fantasizing about torturing American children is also an integral part of Korean culture? Maybe all the visitors to Korea can discuss how they would slowly disembowel an all american school girl while they enjoy some Sam Gyeop Sal and Soju. A good time will be had by all.

Looks like we have a devoted Psy fan here, folks! Guess I hit a nerve.
A "cheap shot"? Relax. It's a completely legitimate shot. Laughing

The sentence was "No one has ever made such a huge impact as Psy."
I know he probably meant no Korean ever, but the sentence sounded funny anyway. That was lost on you apparently.

But I agree: sadly, Psy is pretty much is at the top of the ranks regarding impact. But CULTURAL impact? I don't know. Then, it brings the questions: is Psy representative of the culture and if so, is he a good representative? Again, is this really what they want for the face of Korea? Apparently so.

Seoul simply needs more attractions. There is not really a hell of a lot to do here that is typically touristy. Visit a palace, go up Namsan, go to COEX (stretching already here), maybe hike up Bukhansan......um...

I like living here, but it's not a place I would recommend for a tourist when there are other places in Asia where you can get more bang for your buck.

Psy's been losing fans for months, and his calls for the murder of all Americans has been covered on television in at least 2 Southeastern Asian nations. His arrests for dope, visa fraud in the U.S., and lying to Korea when he was supposed to be in the armed forces was duly noted as well. He's not good for Korea.

Psy has worked hard at being a positive cultural ambassador since his sudden unexpected fame. He comes across as modest, genuine, smart, & humorous. I kind of like the fact that his past is not blemish-free & that he's not a polished product. He has brought an unmanufactured aspect of Korea to world attention.

He's a modern-day court jester.

Nothing against the man at all - but his music is crap. He has done well to make the most of his very limited ability and ride on those coat-tails. Fair play to him.

I'm in SoCal and the ads play on CNN. "Wiki Korea" - Psy helps the viewer to get the names and definitions down of banchan and something else.

very comical.
