I'm a bit belated on this one, but here goes...

Ray Harryhausen, the visual effects pioneer who worked on classic films including "Mighty Joe Young" (1949), "It Came From Beneath The Sea" (1955) and "Jason and the Argonauts" (1963) died today, according to a statement from his family. The American writer and producer was 92 years old. |
Can't say I was a fan. Those Sinbad movies always looked pretty cheezy when they showed up on TV on dusty Saturday afternoons. I gather he was well respected in the film-making community, especially by guys like Lucas and Spielberg.

About 10 years ago someone randomly IMd me this and I could never undo the memory of it.
I've never heard of Ray Harryhausen but because of that video I remember his name. |

I agree that his work looks cheesy now. So do the old films of the Wright Brothers now that we've seen rockets take off into space. Heck, cell phones of only 15 years ago look pretty cheesy. Harryhausen was miles ahead of his contemporaries in his innovation, and that is why he is so respected in his field. |
