"Free" meaning no up front charges. The cost of your phone is paid over installments and wrapped into your monthly bill. Check the bill. It isn't free.

I know what free means. My bill is 62,000 per month (the plan cost) + 6,000 in taxes/fees. I pay 68,000 per month. The phone was FREE!!

EDIT: Actually, on my bill, looking at it now, it says 26,000 per month for the phone and then -26,000 in discounts!!

Same on my bill and everyone else's as well. If you want to tell yourself that the 1,488,000 won you're paying for service gets you a "free" phone, more power to you.

You do understand that using that argument you could say that virtually nothing in this world is free, correct? Which is absurd on the face of it.

That refill is not free. It's built into the cost of the drink.
That weekend of Showtime and HBO is not free. It's built into the cost of your subscription.
That toothpick from the Gimbap Heaven is not free. It's built into the cost of your meal.
That free couch on Craigslist is not free. You have to go and pick it up.

The fact is, while I chose to, supposedly, pay more for the plan price, the matter still remains that the phone itself was free. Might we be paying the same amount over 2 years? Maybe, probably, I don't really give a damn. The OP asked a question, and as it pertains to me, I answered it accurately.

Are we arguing over semantics? Damn straight! Laughing

Actually it's not semantics. As Tob55 pointed out, the amount you are billed will drop at the end of your two year contract because...are you ready? You paid off your phone. If your bill doesn't drop at the end of two years then come back and I'll owe you a beer and an apology. But it will.

You may be right. If so, KT will get a piece of my mind and I'll match your beer and apology!!

LOL! Glad you agree now that your phone was not free. Why are you still trying to Steelrail with the poor analogies?

I can pretty much guarantee nobody is getting a free apple product period. there just isn't enough profits in it for the shops, especially if it's an independent shop.

you do realize the phone costs around 800k brand new, and the profit on one of those things might only be 50 bucks TO THE SHOP.

there's just zero room for them to take a hit on any part of their profit in order to give you the kind of discounts you're talking about.

I used to run 2 phone shops, one in Songtan and one in HBC. You won't convince me you got a free iPhone period, I know the behind the scenes numbers.

The store he went to had a sign that said, "free iphone." Those signs are very rare in Korea. May the odds be ever in your favor!

You do realize the bill you are paying includes recovering the price of the phone? So it may seem like it's free if you don't understand the details of your phone bill.

TJ is right... your bill be drop to more than half the price you currently pay after 2 years... My wife and I use to pay 130kwon a month for our 2 iphone 4. Last month our 2 years ended and now we only pay 55kwon for both of us.... Its pretty crazy...

But we knew all along this would happen and even though they were telling us we got "free" phones we didnt buy into it... hahah

I'm pretty sure optik404 was being sarcastic. Your comment should be directed at War Eagle.

Use an older phone and save cash. Got mine in 2009 and have kept using it. Koreans laugh at me, but I laugh back when I tell them I pay 13,000 won a month.

Unless you're desperate I'd wait for the 5S to come out at this point.

When do you think it will come out in Korea? It hits the U.S. in September, right? But I'd say tack on a few months to that before it will be available for purchase in Korea.

I'm quite happily in the same boat. My phone is over 10 years old & serves fine for simple communication needs. I really dont feel the need to carry entertainment in my pocket.

That said, my old unit is bound to die before long. If I walk into a phone store, whats the lowest-end replacement plan I can look for nowadays? Thats maybe a question for Drew10.

I got out of the phone business a bit over a year ago, but on my way out the door the big rumor was the big companies phasing out feature phones. You'd be hard pressed to find a non-pre-paid feature phone these days. Best to ask your local shop to see if you can get a real free phone on 3g.

*Edit*

And by real free phone I mean a phone that's subsidized to the point that it's free provided you keep your contract.

Same here. I will be using this Galaxy SII until the thing dies or I leave it in a taxi. Unlimited data at 25,000 a month or so is gonna be a sweet deal.
