Hi, has anyone ever heard of a TOEFL practice program that has the actual test ? A teacher claimed he has it and wants to sell it to my academy, but I smell BS. I briefly saw the program and its entirely in Korean and it's not like a typical Barons or Princetons program, you have to manually add the files to each section or something. Let me know if you have heard about this. Thanks |

Some materials and programs (Barons, etc.) may have practice tests and these are especially useful for the multiple choice sections of the exam. The writing and speaking sections are scored by four-six highly trained raters and the score comes from the scores they produce. It is highly dubious that this man can reproduce this. Even if he has past essay and speaking questions, he can't replicate the rating process. Also, the TOEFL like all big-name language tests tries its best to protect the validity of the inferences it's making so again, it's highly dubious he has an 'actual test.' ETS (Educational Testing Service) runs the TOEFL and you could always call them (they're based in the USA) to check any claims this guys is making. That said, there are materials claiming to be from past exams and he could be referring to these. -- Hope this helps and I'm writing this from my memory and experience -- in other words, don't take this to be gospel but I'm pretty sure I have the general facts right. |

Have you even heard of any program like this?
It was all in Korean, students click each section they want to take
and he has to load the files from somewhere. It's not clear cut like the other programs like Baron for example where it's all in the CD Rom.
He also produced TOEFL speaking questions supposedly from past years with each month showing the ones given to Korea and the ones used for the US.
Supposedly his methodology is to just have the kids memorize all of them. He claims that that is how they do it at other hagwons. Is that true? He says that these are actual test questions hacked somehow from the actual previous tests and so having the kids just memorize a paragraph for the independent speaking is the best sure way to get a high score.
I'm kind of suspicious about these claims, but the owner of my hagwon seems to be eating it up because this new guy is Korean America.
He claims that he got everything from his buddy also in Korea.
What do you think? |
