Man Threatens to Blow Up State Building Over Misspelled Sign

Thursday, 30 May 2013 04:11 PM

By Bill Hoffmann

A man carried a pressure cooker into a state education agency in Oregon, said it was a bomb and chillingly claimed he had attempted to blow up their outdoor sign because it contained a misspelling, according to police.

Authorities said Leonard Burdek, 50, of Salem, entered the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission office on Wednesday, dressed in a buttoned-up winter coat and wearing a stocking cap over his head.

His pressure cooker had wires sticking out of it, according to police, jolting workers who thought back to the Boston Marathon bombings which were carried out with pressure cookers rigged with explosives.

"He walked quite confidently into our office as though he had a mission, and I think that was what alarmed me right off the bat," Executive Director Vickie Chamberlain told the Statesman-Journal newspaper.

"He did not look like one of the educators we serve."

Burdek said he had attempted to blow up the agency's misspelled outside sign referring to the letter "d" missing in the word "and" so that it read, "Teacher Standards an Practices Commission."

But, he added, the bomb didn't work.

The newspaper said Burdek implied that employees should be concerned about the level of education students receive. The office handles applications for teachers' licenses.

When Burdek noticed an employee calling 911, he abruptly left. Police arrested him in his van a short time later and seized the pressure cooker, which turned out to be harmless.

He was charged with disorderly conduct.

Sorry, but not being able to spell means you are poorly educated and will be judged accordingly. Not my opinion: fact.

I don't think so. I scored in the 97 percentile for Science and the 94 percentile for Social Sciences when I left High School. I sometimes misspell. Another thing do they give F's for misspelling in English classes at Universities? They never did for me, because they are many other things besides the ability to spell that makes a person a good educator and well educated.

I suppose it is a pet peeve...with many.....when a supposedly English teacher...
is too freaking lazy to check their spelling or at least use spell check before posting!

Point is, people despise this type, and with good reason. This type taints the reputation of the many earnest, self-effacing students interested in language for scholarly fulfillment, not for ostentatious display.

Frankly, however, this type has a point: Our language sucks.

While I don’t fully identify with the grammar snob, I still find myself bewildered by the linguistic and grammatical imprecision permeating our vernacular.

So an individual types a thousand words on Dave's and makes one spelling mistake. What normal person would make an issue of it.

Oh! While I was typing I forgot to include a question mark on the previous sentence. Oh my goodness Laughing Well you know my reasoning maybe faulty, I might have qualities that lack empathy and I might be petty, but at least I'm fitting in as a teacher with my spelling.

Oh! look I put the words 'may and be' in the previous sentence together into one word and that makes it different. Oh! my English really isn't good after all! I should really be ashamed of myself. Laughing I am no good at English at all! Why am I even teaching overseas?

I have to be careful to push all the right buttons so I can be with all the other people who push the right buttons and that includes zero spelling or grammatical errors. Never mind all the other important qualities of being a good teacher and intelligent blogger. I have to be superficial and petty and preferably from England, and also not (well I can't say that here), because after all Americans don't spell things correctly all the time. Americans, you see, should not be teaching overseas, as well as (Oh I can't say that here). When are we going to have only people who can push all the right buttons which I myself have to aspire to?

I have to admit that I'm a spelling/grammar nazi...but a silent one. I do a lot of eye rolling when I see "loose" instead of "lose" and "to" instead of "too". My spelling is terrible, but if I don't know how to spell something, I look it up, cut and past.

BUT!! My students are in my classroom, not here. If people want to use terrible grammar, misspell words and use the wrong word, it's not my place to criticize.

BUT!!! I will take your post a lot more seriously if your grammar and spelling are correct.
