Really! It's the reason I was poking fun at her about she should get married so her boyfriend wouldn't drop her. Of course some may have thought I was being serious. Dumb Question. Dumb Answer. |

Hi - I hear you... tell them the truth and that you want one apartment. Tell them to pay your 400 000 won in cash to the other partner.
My wife and I did that and it worked perfectly before we got married.
They would ask q's about why you're not married and living together - I just told them it doesn't concern them!!! They kept quiet after I told them Westerners do it that way. When in Korea, DO IT YOUR WAY!!!
Hope that helps. |
I was hoping to hear this, randall, but... will our not-being-married affect our chances of landing jobs in the first place?
I know that EPIC requires marriage. We're not applying through them. We're applying to public schools via other options.
But would a public school really let us each have our separate apts and then bunk up together in one of them? I'm not too eager to have a Korean landlord angry with me for always sleeping over at my not-married man's apt.
And thanks, ttompatz, for stating the obvious. I have no delusions about marriage keeping the man monogamous. Apparently others do... |

you seem to think it's monogamy (or the lack thereof) "others" were referring to. i agree with ttompatz. people will cheat no matter where they go. i wasn't talking about monogamy at all.
all i was saying is that i've watched couples come here time and time again and fail because it's just not a good idea. that's all. the exact reasons why are lost on me since:
a. i would never do such a thing
and
b. i've never pried into the affairs of the people who this has happened to.
but you obviously made your choice so there's probably not much else to be said. |

... Oh I'm sorry. I didn't realize you're an expert on other people's lives and how they should live it... please continue while we all put a pause on our busy day to take notes. |

Trust me - if your man wanted to cheat on you by now... he would've!
You're in the clear... don't worry about that. You'll have lotsa time to spend your valuable time on. Other than listen to "I̶ ̶b̶e̶ ̶a̶ ̶B̶o̶r̶e̶!"

Wow I can't believe all these people are talking concerns about cheating just because someone is in Asia...I get there might be more temptations but wow. Give her partner some credit! Anyone who can use coming to Asia and being around more attractive women as an excuse to cheat, or as an excuse to expect someone to cheat, is really messed up. I am moving there in August with my husband and I know there will be nothing like that going on because I married a faithful man who cares about me. If someone cheats in Asia, they'll cheat anywhere that there is temptation and they are just not good people. I'm sick of people making it seem like men don't have control over themselves in these situations.
Anyway, you will have to have a marriage certificate for public schools or EPIK, etc. My husband and I got married based on wanting to move to Korea. Of course, we would have either way eventually (we're both still working on our careers, etc. and otherwise would have waited until we were more established and had money for a wedding) but moving to Korea gave us a jumpstart on the whole process, and we couldn't be happier together |

I don't get it... the whole asian woman thing is just so overly exaggerated.
there's just no exotic trigger for me...
been here nearly 5 years and my wife's a million times more attractive than
any of the locals... i do notice them, but there's absolutely NO reason to
indulge in something so meaningless that can ruin not only your marriage
and a very personal friend, but your whole life! |

It's not getting married so that we can get jobs. My husband won't even be working in Korea and I'm plenty qualified on my own! It's to ensure that couples who want to stay together can. Why are there so many haters on these boards? Oh well . To each his own. |

You wanted to move to Korea for the job. The job requires that you be married to stay together. Yes you did! |

Whatever dude. If it gives you pleasure to be right you can have it. Don't really care what you think because I am so happy that I don't need to troll forums and criticize other people's choices with snark comments |

| OP, initially you did not state that your boyfriend will not be working here.Marriage in that case may be helpful so that he has a visa for the year(tied to your E2 visa). Otherwise he will have to renew his holiday visa every 3/6 months by leaving Korea and returning. |

| ibeattheborg, You might be confused between me and the original poster. Sorry! I think OP seems like they are both teaching. Was just using my situation as another example. |
