Plenty of facebooking from 2006 to 2009 and not attracting very many people at all. I still say it's the recession.

I'm really not sure why anyone would actually come to Korea and spend all of that money prior to landing a job.

The whole 'apply in person only' thing really doesn't apply to Korea or China (actually, apparently a small number of schools in China do want an 'in person' interview prior to hiring anyone).

If you do not have mommys basement available and actually pay your way everywhere you go, and have to wait on documents and are not a blonde american, and you want to work in seoul... then its surprising how much you can rack up in living expenses and so on while you're waiting around for the job you want.

Loads of people were in this predicament last year. Hostels in seoul were packed with people waiting around for interviews.

Yeah, screw growth. Let's all live under our lord and be peasants scraping enough food to eat and die at 30 just like our ancestors did. People don't need wealth or a middle class lifestyle. Save the planet and off yourself. 7 billion people can just eat banannas in the trees.

Your poor understanding of environmentalism -which is apparently shared by much of the self-absorbed human population- is one of the problems.

Continued growth like what we have experienced over recent decades is simply no longer possible without inflicting serious and irreversible damage on the planet.

You yourself come from a priveleged society that has consumed more than its fair share of earths resources for too long. That situation is not sustainable.

Climate change is ony one result of our abuses. Others include the collapse of our oceans food chains, collapse of ocean currents, aridification of formerly productive land, loss of biodiversity, increases in human ailments (cancers, respiratory diseaes) etc.

Whats the alternative? To develop without harming the earths natural ecosystems. Human development (even growth) does not have to come at the cost of trashing the planet. Its only short-term greed and exploitive practises that have done so.

Climate change is a canard.
Ocean food chain collapse--where?
Currents--collapsing?
Aridification--where again?
Loss of biodiversity--and?
Increases in human ailments--on the decline, substantially.

The sky is not falling in. We're doing fine.

I agree with you in regards to climate change - discussing that is like discussing religion. We do not control Earth's climate - much like we are not in the center of the universe and we are not created in the image of god, a supposed most powerful being in the universe that does nothing but watch over us, listening to our prayers.

Overpopulation though is of a serious concern. It is one of the reasons why the food these days is so heavily genetically modified.

Actually, talk about biodiversity in nature, fish, animal life, etc - it is most certainly on the decline. Plant life is on the decline - we do do cut more trees than we grow - and they do take a while to grow (perhaps we might need genetically modified trees that can grow in a year rather than 40?).

There is no doubt that water/air pollution is on the rise.

Energy costs are skyrocketing - it seems that many wars of today are all about energy - well, that and religion. One has to wonder when food/air/water will be the next subject of hostility.

In the end, are we doing fine? One has to think not only of the immediate present but also of the foreseeable future.

Please don't.

There's already 9 billion+ humans crowding the planet and most of them are trashing the earth into oblivion.

What makes me laff is the sheer illogic of the rationale for growth. "we need more people so that they pay taxes to support the people we already have".

So obviously a vicious circle is born whereby you have to keep increasing the population exponentially just to pay pensions, until the time comes everyone starves because we've utterly wrecked the earth we stand on. And make no mistake thats what we're busy doing.

Somebody hasn't really thought this plan through.

Well Julius, with this staring you in the face everyday and getting closer...why go on? I mean it all seems so pointless since we as a species are obviously doomed.

Perhaps you should start planning your move to the moon and have a bio-diverse shack with full life support built for you up there.
