So here is the dilly so to speak,

I am a Canadian student and I'm finishing my University degree over the summer. Classes will be done and graded by the first of September. However, I have been told that I need my actual diploma to get a job in Korea. This seems a touch anal rententive to me. Is it possible to get a job with only a transcript or some other official document from my university. I am too eager to depart to wait until convocation.

How long do you expect it will be until you get your diploma after graduation? Weeks? Months?

If it's weeks, and you know definintely when you're going to get it, put out feelers about 2 weeks before you get your diploma. Then you'll have time to talk to recruiters and schools while your diploma is in the mail.

When I got my first job in Korea I was in the same situation as you. I was finished my classes in December with no convocation until May. Before I came to Korea, I obtained a letter from the registrar's office of my university stating that I had completed my degree requirements and was just waiting for the degree to be awarded. I came to Korea on a tourist visa and went to Immigration with my letter and all the other documents. They issued me an E2 visa with no hassles.

As has been well reported on this board, Immigration rules tend to be rather subjective, at least when put into practice by the staff at the Immigration office. When I went to renew my visa the following year, staff at Immigration had changed somewhat and they were less than pleased. Although at that point I did have my degree in hand, they told me that the E2 should never have been issued in the first place. There was talk of fines and penalties, but eventually they just renewed my visa.

If you're going to get your visa in Canada, call the consulate and see if they will issue you the visa with the kind of letter I had.

That kind of letter worked back in 1995...don't know if it still will, though.

I am pretty sure the Consulate in Canada website said taht you have to have degree in hand. I just checked that recently. But if you grease a few wheels you might get by...

there's a post here about david kang...he ripped and destroyed my degree and refused to pay for another one, I hate that guy, before i leave his office is gonna be visited by a few friends of mine

Cdnguy...you should be able to get transcripts before your degree. You may have to pay a bit for them, but it will give you proof of your graduation with a university degree to come.
Furthermore, many places of hire here want to see ORIGINAL transcripts for proof of graduation, so make sure you have ORIGINAL copies when you come here - whether you come to Korea/Japan/Taiwan with your defree in hand or not.

I can't see you getting too much of a problem. If there is a position you can start here the director can/will make it happen. You simply need valid proof.

cndguy...its not that complicated....

1- Get transcripts
2- Get a letter issued by your uninersity's registrar that says you have graduated. This letter needs to have the univeristy seal. It should also state that you will receive your diploma at a certain time.

If this is not enough for immigration then you will have to wait until you get your diploma.

Thanks everyone for the advice.

In respect to just waiting for my degree, it would take three months and I'm not too keen on that.
