|
|
I recently made a quick trip back home and noticed a whole lot of new jargon used by people. People were talking about "back stories" and "bucket lists", etc. It just reminded me how long I've been away and how I've missed out on certain nuances of the development of my mother tongue! Calling someone a "douche" or "douche bag" also seems popular.
There's more, I should've put pen to paper to record them all. Anyways, it made an impression. I don't get back much, maybe once every 3 - 4 years. |

Also guys refer to each other as "Bro" now or it's variant "Brah".
It's like English has gotten more retarded while I've been away. |

I remember one of the first times I went home after being in Korea for a while. Suddenly "The Atkins" diet was all the rage. I went from having never heard of it to suddenly hearing about it every day...from my grandpa even!
Judging from your examples, you've been away from home (and the internet!) for a looong time! |

Sometimes language is just trendy. It's noticeable on TV too. I've been watching some baseball, and they say "athleticism" and "differential" a lot now. |

Years ago, I heard a blues/jazz tune called "Never Trust a Man that Calls you Bro."
Here in Korea, I learned there is a grain of truth in that title. |

I was hearing some of this stuff from my elementary schoolers 4 years ago. The OP must have really been out of touch. |

With the internet, social networks, movies and tv, I don't see how someone could become out of touch with modern English while living in South Korea. Now, if one were living in North Korea it might be a different story. |

Speaking of commonly used language, I find it interesting how the use of this term has cycled in my lifetime.
Growing up, it was one of the most used derogatory terms that kids(myself included) called each other.
Then, for about 20 years or so, it seemed that most people stopped using it as it was deemed insensitive.
But for at least the last ten years it seems to have come back with a vengeance.
Just saying......... |

At first, I was wondering the same thing, at least about some of the examples given.
But then I remembered that by the time I catch on to some terms they have already become passe, even though I live in the US.
It's not easy keeping one's finger on the pulse of the young crowd. |

"Bucket List" has been popular since the 2007 movie. If anything, it's getting less trendy. |

Others...
1. Don't be that guy.
2. Why did you have to go there?
3. Don't go there!
4. I heart you.
5. Stamp it! (for something you are sure will happen)
Do any of you teach your students these "hip", albeit stupid, modern phrases? Although it can be irritating, language is constantly evolving for better or worse. |

I don't know why it is, but the youngsters seem to use the word "random" all the time. "My mind is so random.." "I'm just bein' random…" |
