I'm interested in getting a credit card. I know the rule used to be that you had to work at a public school or university but I assume that has changed.

I work for Chungdahm (a large national corporation) and make 3.2 a month. Do you think they would accept me?

i'd assume you'd be fine. i would first try keb then shinhan although you will probably get low starting limits with both. however, if you can sweet talk those lotte mart card adjummas you could probably get one with a 3-5mil starting limit.

your best bet is to have one of your coworkers help you though. banks here require your company info when you apply for a credit card. if you can find out how much your company is worth and say that you are a "manager" of some kind, you can get a better card/better limit.

Thanks for the tips! Good to know.

I'm pulling my bloody hair out here trying to get a check/debit card here that will just bloody work online. I got a KEB global card (with VISA mark), I got a Woori POP Check card (with VISA mark) but no goddamn online store will take it. No amazon, ebay, steam, nothing. So so frustrating.

Check cards are not credit cards.. you need an actual credit card. Debit cards will work on some Korean sites. Like Gmarket, Homeplus, emart, etc.
They will not work on overseas sites. The marking on them just means you can use them in an overseas ATM that also has certain markings.

In the 10 days you have been toying with this (since the original post) you could have:

1) gone in to a bank (any bank) and opened a interest bearing time deposit with 1 million won.

2) applied for a credit card using the time deposit as collateral so there is no delay in "credit card approval".

3) received your C/C with a 900k limit and been using it already with a minimum of fuss or bother.

THEN you can piss around to find another card if you so desire.

Ghod... Rocket Science.....

Or since he's a KEB customer, he can just go in and apply for an X2 card, and get it in about 4 days or so.
No deposit required.

waygeek, the keb rainbow card is only a check card. unless you specifically ask for it or the teller just chooses to do it, they will give you the non visa/mastercard branded version that can ONLY be used to withdraw money from an atm.

Not true. The KEB Rainbow Card functions the same as the KEB Visa Power Check card. I know because my girlfriend and I went into KEB our first month here and they gave her the Power Check card which has the Visa logo on it and gave me the Rainbow card. (This resulted in many jokes thereafter.) I went back into the bank, and the teller said the two cards are identical.

The Rainbow Card can do anything a normal Korean check card can do. It's not limited to just ATMs. Anywhere that accepts a normal check/credit card will accept your Rainbow card. Also, it should work for online purchases, though I've never tried it. Just make sure the bank puts your correct Alien ID# in their system, because apparently you need that to order anything online. I wouldn't worry about getting a credit card, unless for some reason you really want one. Just flash your rainbow card, and you're good. Now get out there, Nancy, and start shopping! Wink

That's true, but they don't function as a credit card on overseas websites. No Korean check card does, regardless of the logos on it, they need to be an actual credit card. He specifically mentioned that he was trying to shop on amazon, steam, etc you need a real credit card for that.

Also, don't bother with the EasyOne account for wiring money home. It's more expensive than just clicking Global Wire Transfer on their website and doing it that way. The only bonus I can see to the EasyOne account is that you can wire money home from an ATM. But I don't know why anyone would ever need to do that.

I guess I missed the part where he said he'll be making online purchases from specifically non-Korean websites. That's a different issue altogether. I just use my American card for doing that. But if he doesn't have one, then yeah he'd need to get an international credit card.
