Hi,
I landed a great job in the States and need to leave my position ASAP. I've only taught one week, so I have two months left on my contract.
They also set me up with an apartment... Will they make me pay for the apartment before I leave?
Please help! |

You've only taught one week and you have two months left on the contract? What?
Anyways...if you just got here and then are already leaving then why did you come here in the first place?
They can't make you pay for the apartment, but at least try to find someone to replace you before you leave. If not, you have no legal obligation to pay for anything I believe. |

Yes, I know... Why did I even come?
I actually applied for this job in April and went through three rounds of interviews in May. I figured I didn't get the job and so I figured I'd spend the summer teaching English in Korea... It's JUNE. They got back to me nearly a month after my interviews... I didn't expect to get it, which is why I came here.
Does it matter that I'm a Korean Citizen? Am I still free of any obligations? |

| That question will take someone more knowledgeable than me to answer unfortunately. The only thing I could think of though that could affect you is a civil law suit for money. Try to find someone to replace you if it's possible. |

Edit:
I just came back from talking to the Hagwon owner. He said that he won't release me from my contract, but I don't see what's keeping me from buying a plane ticket and leaving... |

Nothing prevents you from leaving, well except some ethics. As people mentioned you could be hit up with a civil suit later when you come back to Korea.
Are there any outlays the school (camp?) had to pay for you to be hired, like recruiter, plane ticket, etc.
If you do leave, my advice is to give up the chance of getting paid. |

If you are Korean you are free to leave your employment at any time and without any notice without any repercussion or financial liability.
They can't hold you to the costs of apartment unless YOU signed an actual lease for it.

| Yea, your boss probably thinks you are an E-2 visa holder and locked to his school. Check facebook groups for getting a replacement. |

So if I signed paperwork with the Hagwon, but not the actual lease, I can't be held liable? |

I was willing to work this week as well without getting paid but the Hagwon found a replacement for me. Now, he's demanding that I pay for all of the realtor fees, early contract termination fees, etc. I can't afford it right now because I paid for my own flight to Korea and paid for another expensive one-way ticket out of Korea. What to do... I'm not even in Seoul anymore... |

I may be wrong, but it sounds like that is what he is saying. 
I am interested now, how did you get hired to teach at a hagwon as a Korean citizen without your boss discovering this? |

He knew I was a Korean citizen. Or if not, he thought I was an F-4 so he wouldn't have to sponsor my visa... It also wasn't for teaching English. I taught Classic literature while I was there... |
