Considering the simple fact that 2 Europeans wouldn't have qualified for a visa anyway that doesn't surprise me.
What was that old adage about a fool and their money?

Err.... they could have been British, Scottish or Irish.... unless that's not in Europe @@ |

Yes, and they were one of those. I had originally mentioned their nationality, but decided to substitute it for 'Europeans' so that it didn't seem as if I was painting a certain group in a negative light. 'Europeans' seemed vague enough and still drove the point that they were soccer/football fans. |

The use of 'Europeans' threw me. Right away I thought of the continent not England or Scotland, Wales and Ireland. The use of 's' caused me to think the people were from different countries. No harm done but, and I can only speak for myself, the fact that two Brits, Scots or Canucks took off after getting tickets to Korea would in no way cause me to lose respect for the other 10's of millions of their country folk or even the entire sub group of same aged English speaking peoples around the world.
Never paying for flights again is sheer overkill and distracts one from the issue at hand- runners. I'd say it says more about the guy who bought the tickets than anything else. In business there is risk. Teachers in Korea have some financial risk too. Pay for their own flight and get fired soon after?, 2 months pay and the ticket home is a pretty substantial financial risk, is the housing up to moderately decent standards? is the owner? will one get treated respectfully with some cultural sensitivity or treated like a POS slave and perhaps even stranded in a foreign country with little or no cash?
Paying for the flight to Korea and back as well as the housing are a risk. So is buying inventory for your shop. IDK if these risks can fairly be compared as to who has more at stake. But IMHO the possibility of being stranded in a foreign country with no cash if the place goes under or the owner turns on you or makes unwanted advances is a little bit scarier than being out the cost of a plane ticket. One is a cost of business the other is the stuff of Korean EFL history. The kind of history mitigated by prepaid flights and housing.
My rant for the day. |

Yeah, but the Hogwan still lost a significant amount of money. |

Almost all hagwons (99%) give up front prepaid airfare. That is only one of the fantastic perks offered by Korea (no other country is so desperate for EFL teachers that they are prepared to do that).
Airfare is a fantastic bargaining chip in your first three months in Korea. The hagwon invesst a ton of money in you as you start (airfare, apartment, training). They will be definitely be out to please you. (meet you at the airport etc)
Of course as the contract comes to an end the hagwon begins to hold more of the cards (airfare home, bonus).
Anyway my main point is don't expect any airfare or airport pick up in any other country.

I wonder if they lost more money than they should have been paying in tax, health insurance and pensions?

Yabbut. LOL
If they can't absorb $1500 in a wasted ticket they certainly can't afford to cover the $5500+ that they owe the teacher at the end of the contract.
Teacher's have much more financial risk especially compared to monthly income than hogwons do.
Nobody likes losing money but trashing a successful business model because of an outlier is just plain stupid. |

I didn't say that. Your quote mechanism misfired. And good point. |
