how are you keeping your rooms/apartments cool this summer without having to resort to AC?

i had this clever idea to position my fan right in front of the freezer portion of the fridge.

but it wasn't very clever at all.

actually, it was downright fucking stupid. Crying or Very sad

I turn on the air con. Let others save the planet. I don't like heat and humidity. Try to save the environment in other ways, like actually put insulation on buildings and install energy efficient systems. This will mean less energy useage and staying cool. Is it my fault the folks were too effen stupid to properly insulate their buildings. If they don't like having high energy bills, refit your buildings. Why do I have to suffer and pay the price for others lack of common sense? When, it's hot, I turn it on. Can't sleep without it. Enough said.

it's not that bad right now, in fact its downright strange given the lack of a start to the rainy season (the monsoon boundary is south of jeju and not supposed to move for a while) heck even in the evenings i'm turning off my fan's once in a while. based on the current weather forecast it may be at least another week or two before i even think about turning on the a/c.

yeah its a little steamy but i've seen it far worse

I have an idea - buy a simple vest with many pockets, stuff them with cooling packs (the ones you get when you guy frozen stuff from gmarket for example, though I suspect that there may be better options where they cooling packs are not as cold, while remaining cold for a longer period of time) and that should work.

I intend to try this idea out this summer - should be interesting.

You can actually get something called a cool gel mat (check gmarket) which is basically a gigantic cooling pack. You're supposed to put it on your bed when you sleep.

There are special blankets that are available in Korea that are supposed to help you feel cooler. We have one at home and it works great! My wife doesn't like to turn on the AC at night (AC Disease, akin to Fan Death...). The blanket is made from a thin, gauze-like fabric and on the hot nights it does make it feel cooler. We also have pillows that are stuffed with a type of grain (barley, I think) that are good for hot summer nights.

Other than that, a cold shower before going to sleep?

Sometimes when I'm about to come out of the shower I'll start slowly turning the water cooler and cooler until it's cold.

Otherwise I use the fan a lot (at work and at home)

Short sleeve thin shirts for work

Always keep bottled water in the fridge. The tap water is fine here so it isn't inconvenient having to constantly buy more water or boil it

Leave my apartment windows and balcony doors open overnight, though I can't imagine that will cool the place down any more come July. I couldn't do this before because of mosquitoes, but I've got one of those plug in things now and it works a treat.

AC is cheap in Korear, I have it on all the time and it usually under or around 100,000. You can't put a price on comfort. Screw sweating all summer long.

New air conditioners are very energy efficient.

In our house, we have one of the big self-standing ones in the living room and a smaller wallmounted one in our bedroom. The larger of the two is on for around 14 hours a day and the one in the bedroom about 12.

The total difference in our electric bill since we started using the air conditioners? A massive 10,000 won a month.
