100%

FISA

Quote:
The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act allows surveillance, without court order, within the United States for up to one year unless the "surveillance will acquire the contents of any communication to which a United States person is a party". If a United States person is involved, judicial authorization is required within 72 hours after surveillance begins.

. . .

Approval of a FISA application requires the court find probable cause that the target of the surveillance be a "foreign power" or an "agent of a foreign power", and that the places at which surveillance is requested is used or will be used by that foreign power or its agent. In addition, the court must find that the proposed surveillance meet certain "minimization requirements" for information pertaining to U.S. persons

2012 FISA Report (.pdf)

Quote:
Of these, 1,789 applications included requests for authority to conduct electronic surveillance. Of these 1,789 applications, one was withdrawn by the Government. The FISC did not deny any applications in whole or in part.

Secret Executive Branch courts apparently exist to rubber-stamp extraordinary wiretapping.

Don't you feel safe?

Bumped for reconsideration in light of NSA warrantless wiretapping revelations.

Ugh, this shit has been going on for longer than most people realize and it's painful to see the US continue to go in this suppressive, backwards direction. The NSA and these whistle blowers who used to work there are making America look like the old Soviet Union. Even Putin said something like, "In America, people don't browse the internet, the internet browses them". I'm sure the same stuff is going on there but this is getting ridiculous. I don't know how much longer the old 'go back to bed America, your government is in control' technique can last, now that information is free and we can see the dark side of these egomaniac asswipes who are trying to control everything and rip everyone off.

At least it is hard to create a bonfire with e-books.

Substitute "military industrial complex" (a term coined by Dwight D. Eisenhower back in '61) for "Fascist dictators" and there are eerie similarities to 1938 or the 45-'53 era.
