Yes. They're automatically taking out the utilities. I don't think talking about the pension or health insurance would go over well with the boss. I'm guessing. The last foreign teacher got them in his second year, but he was good with the students.

How much are utilities? I thought you said 100,000. If I remember right my taxes were around 50,000-60,000 per month when I was making 2.4, so yours should be even less than that. But they are taking a set 200,000 every month? Where is this extra money going? Do you get a pay stub at all?

Maybe you should just leave this school.

Yup. So was I.

I'm very active, so I've taken additional coverage since the national health insurance doesn't cover all costs. I also get travel insurance which covers me for half a million dollars whenever I travel abroad (only about 1.40-1.50$ per day).

Hagwons who don't provide you with medical insurance do it for 2 main reasons: 1) they don't want to declare you with the tax office or immigration (thus evading paying their taxes and allowing them to hire unqualified teachers) and 2) they want to discourage you from taking sick days.

I use Cigna global expat insurance. It costs me a bit over $100 a month, and I'm covered in every country in the world but the USA for in-patient care (and out-patient, if it's cancer) for up to 3 million dollars per year.

I typically get ours from Seven Corners because it covers repatriation and their rates are very competitive.

I'll look into Cigna for my wife. We typically travel to Canada, so for our kid and I (we both have citizenship) it's only a matter of claiming residency so that we're covered by the provincial health care insurance if there are any major problems, major enough that we can't be flown back to Korea. I don't know what is the minimum in country time required in order to claim residency for non-resident citizens (I'm sure it varies from province to province), but the Canada Health Act limits the period to three months, hence the half million coverage instead of the minimum 20-50 thousand or so that is typically advised to travelers.

If I did get a big hospital bill, couldn't I just leave the country and not pay? Nevermind, actually. I'll try to keep the outdoors stuff on the safe side as much as I can. Thanks for the insurance tips.

That would only be only be possible if you had health insurance. Without, you'll have to pay upfront since you're liable to flee without paying your bills. Hospitals aren't normally run by morons, you know.

Pension and health are required every year you work and not just in your second year. So, 200,000 for utilities, taxes, pension, and health do seem to bring you up short. I'd think the bill might be more. I'd ask to see a break down of every bill and a copy of all utility bills.

Doesn't matter, it's illegal. No health care card after 90 days, get out. Labor board, tax office, etc. Then get a letter of release or be an ass until you get one.

Clearly, I was only explaining why some break the law.
