So what do you make of this TV commercial in Japan? I'm not so sure we could get away with something in America, e.g. - have a Japanese salary man with bowl-cut hairdo, buck teeth and coke rimmed glasses selling this rice cooker saying, "Itta very, very, goo lice coooka! Itta cook your lice gooo!!"

1. It's a stereo typing of American women, not West European. Europeans don't spray the phrase 'AMAZING' all over the place like American women do.

2. There are Japanese girls who's dyed their hair and had nose jobs. They are not unsightly or social outcasts.

3. I won't admit to it but watching dumb blondes getting ridiculed is kind of fun.

I think it's great that other countries don't buy in to the American way of political correctness. Can't say this, can't say that, oh we don't want to offend anyone by saying the wrong thing.

It's pure comedy. That's what gives us the greatest pleasure. I wish they'd do it more.

Agreed. If Americans want to act out their little cultural neurosis within the boundaries of their own nation, okay, that's ultimately up to them, but demanding the entire rest of the world join them in the neurosis is completely unreasonable. It's good and healthy that the Japanese people are able to casually joke like this without freaking out.

No, its not. Its juvenile and offensive. Not to mention bad for business.

Well it's definitely juvenile (so is a bunch of men running around a field kicking a ball, but that's a global pass time!), but what's so intrinsically offensive about it? Were you offended? I've got a big nose and I wasn't. Or are we playing by the "if someone's offended, it's offensive" ruleset?

I wasn't very offended, honestly. I felt very mild resentment, because I am typing this on a Toshiba, and no significant displeasure.

If this were actionable (its certainly not), that would be the common law standard, yes.

I think America's only more PC because of it's diversity. Sure the Japanese and Koreans have no problem stereotyping other people, but I bet they'd be offended if someone did the same with them. Korea's only "PC" in regards to Korea.

I always found it strange how americans were so pc about making jokes about other races or cultures or depicting them in any kind of derogatory role, but always felt the need to pick on the British?
How many times did you see a foreign bad guy that didn't talk like Hannibal lecter?
Im not arsed btw and neither are most brits from what I can tell, maybe thats why it happens?

You can thank Sir Oswald Mosely and the BUF for that.

Would you like to see Britannia Rule again, my friend?

It's all fun and games until we start goofing on the Japanese, Chinese and Koreans. They do not like to be made fun of.

It also creates an "Us" vs. "Them" attitude that isn't very healthy.

Just think, though, could we have adds like this back in the US with guys dressed in suits with a rice bowl haircut, buck teeth, thick rimmed glasses going, "Ching, chang, chong, itta make a verry good Lice!"

Is that good and healthy as Fox posted above?

It's Benny Hill circa 1980. Not very funny any more. Not because it's particularly offensive. Just because it's old hat.

I bet many Koreans dislike Jay Leno for a joke he made about eating dog once, 10 or 15 years ago. It is like what "I'm With You" said. It would be a bad idea to do something like this in reverse.
