I was going to message ttompatz directly but decided to share with the group.
I work at a hagwon and my boss is nice. Only problem is his English skills are sub-pa, so communication problems do come up. On Friday, he asked if I had my diploma. Confused, I said, "Yes.... I have my degree". He then commented that the police are coming around checking. He next mentoned about looking for illegal teachers.
Now me, I know generally how things work here in Korea. Yet I still panic like chiken little at times. Why would the police be wanting my diploma and checking for illegal workers? Yes, immigration might check but they got have my details a long time ago because I needed it for my visa. Besides they have it on record. Maybe the boss meant the Education Office. That is what I am thinking is happening. I think the Education Office is coming around and doing the regular spot check and checking of lists.
Now comes up to the question and help needed. I know that a few years ago the Ministry of Education (local and up) also jumped into the crowd of wanting a papers like verified degree, criminal recorord checks, and health checks. The thing is I [u/]assumed[/u]. Like they say when you assume you make and "ass" out "u" and "me". I have been at my present place for over year and a half and never was asked for copies of documents. I assumed my boss had me registered with MOE. I should not have asummed things, my boss is a nice guy but he is a bit clueless at times. Hell, I know more of the regulations then him.
And interesting post from onetheway says that I should have been registered with MOE within two weeks of when I started. It has been more then a year! Panic!

To legally be a teacher in Korea you need to be registered with the MOE (Ministry of Education) at your local Education Office - Koreans and Foreigners need to do this. The rule at the Education Office is that you have to register with a copy of your ARC and passport within 2 weeks of your first day at your school.
So, in reality, you have only 2 weeks from your arrival to get your Health Check, apply for and receive your ARC. |
Actually looking at the relevant laws. It looks like it is a month.
I know in some way I have been registered, because I have submitted a Korean check. Maybe boss got me half done. So It looks like I need to register. Or boss needs to? I hope there is no fine. Or want to avoid one.
First area, I need to go to immigration and get some copies of my documents. So posters, has anybody ever requested copies from immigration by themselves. Can we get details, like cost, ease, problems, etc. Heck if some one can even give the Korean to ask for them. You know how immi is you ask for something easy and they get confused and make it complicated or a drama. So, I think any stories or examples can also help future people. I have never done myself just would like to get some info. Like to know what to expect.
I am hoping the certified copies will be fine. I remember some news from a year ago of some MOEs wanting originals! Are any local MOEs still doing that?
Second area. In registering foreigners and documents. Who is responsible? I though the school/business is responsible for informing MOE and keeping them up to date. Have teachers themselves every registered papers or details with MOE. themselves. Or has it always been give relevant documents to boss/waygook wrangler/manager and they will handle the details.
Third area, has anybody heard any news of spot checks, raids or whatever in Daejeon. Heck, for the rest of Korea two. I know there are the odd news reports of cracking down or busting. Yet, after the report I never notice much other news. No gossip or that comes up.
The paranoid side of me wants to be prepared. Besides I have done nothing wrong and very sure most I am all proper and legal in visa status and that.
In the end, I will still go to immigration on Monday and get the copies and have ready for visit Be ready before they ask.
Thanks to all. |

Copies of relevant docs from immigration = 300 won per page + 3000 won for the letter of certification stating that that they are immigration made/authorized/verified copies.
The SCHOOL/hagwon is responsible for registering you with the MOE.
If there is a problem it is the school who will get fined. You are OK as an E2 registered foreigner with a valid ARC. There are no consequences for you.
There have been spot checks but then are not like "ICE raids" in the US where they swoop in with guns drawn and treat everyone like illegals and criminals.
What usually happens is some guy in a jacket and tie comes to the office, asks the boss for his documents. He makes notes in a file and then sends the summons to your boss for non-compliance at a later date.
