In my experience in numerous teachers' offices in Korean schools, almost all the teachers step outside the office into the hall, an empty room, or outside to conduct personal phone calls. Nothing to do with language, just a common courtesy.

It's truly amazing how Americans can complain about people speaking other languages besides English when they are in the U.S. and at the same time other Americans complain about getting the same criticism from natives when they are living in foreign countries. Shocked

It looks like I'm gonna have a hell of an uphill battle when I get to Korea to convince my employers and co-workers that I'm not a typical arrogant asshole American. Confused

Well, nice to know you're a beacon of shining light and every other American is a boorish lout.

Do you seriously think the Americans complaining about other languages than English [where are they anyway? I hear about these people all the time but never actually see them - I've lived in the south, the midwest, New York City, and California] would be the same ones remarking on locals doing the same when they're abroad?

Your perfunctory pseudo-cosmopolitan attitude is, contrary to your expectations, not going to endear you to the locals or other foreigners (who, believe it or not, will be your best shot at a good social circle) if/when you get to Korea.

One reason phone calls can be annoying in any language is that you're hearing just one speaker, or so I read once. Seems to be what annoys people more is not when it just appears rude in a situation, but hearing just one side. Also, foreign language does annoy people too sometimes when they don't understand it well.

Maybe, except for the fact that tons of teachers and others were gathered in the room all morning speaking loudly in Korean. There were times I could barely hear my grandmother. But, not once did I tell them to pipe down. So being loud in Korean is ok. But speaking in English (without being loud) isn't.

How about getting on a bus and being told to be quiet by some Korean and then after some Koreans are talking loud and nothing is said to them? See the pattern here? Other foriegners have complained on here for the same scenario being on the subway or being in a store somewhere, etc. For the record, I've never told people speaking in a foriegn language to be quiet!

Now this is on balance, as a call home to the family 2 or 3 times a year hasn't offended my other past schools. If anything, they were happy I got to speak to my family. So, I'm not saying this is all folks here. But, there are still xenophobic pockets here. It was way worse 5 and maybe even 10 years ago. But that doesn't mean I like xenophobic BS anymore or anyless than before.

I appreciate the lesson learned here everyone.

I will make sure to stay away from the "I just wanna complain about things" threads from now on.

My mistake. Rolling Eyes

i was sitting in the cafeteria having lunch with my co-teacher a few weeks ago. we were talking to each other, and one of the other teachers sitting next to us gets up and moves, and says something in korean to my co-teacher. she told me he said that he didn't like that we were speaking so much english.

a month or two before that, i was in a cab with some of my friends, including a korean-american friend of mine who speaks fluent korean. everyone was talking in english, and the cab-driver said to my korean-american friend that she must tell everyone in the cab to be quiet because he doesn't like hearing english.

in both of these incidents the koreans explicitly said that they didn't want to hear english - it had nothing at all to do with the volume of speech.

part of the reason is because they want to know what they are talking about..
but because they cant understand they get annoyed..
sometimes it is because the person is noisy..
but esspecially for the older generation..it is because they are nosey and want to know what you are saying

Who is 'they'? All Koreans? Or just the one Korean who showed surprise (and probably not offense, as you picked up on it) at your Korean ability? Considering how little we speak it or put an effort into learning (I have like six works in Korean and I'm here a year for example). See how generalizations get out of hand?

Its about owning territory. Americans often do the same. Its a mixture of insecurity and arrogance.

What all these booming, deafening people are saying is "I'm more important, powerful, dominant, sexually attractive, smarter, popular, than anybody else in this room".

Watch how ajosshis tend to conduct "conversations" at the top of their voices when sat in restaurants. They're trying to own the place by violating everybody elses right to peace and quiet. You could probably hear them from space.

Such people are so insecure that they need to draw the attention of complete strangers in order to feel good about themselves. "Take notice of me or I don't exist!"

Im soo tired Koreans complain about foriegners speaking in english or our music is too loud or they get mad if a some one is talking on the phone, they need to get a life and learn more about common sence, and quit being racist, bigots, against foriegners. Play that comformist stulff to your own people, not us!!!

And no, its not a territory thing, americans dont do that, Koreans are just plane Narrcisistic, and bigots against anybody who is not like them, dress the same, talke the same get plastic surgery, and look the same,
then koreans do the altimate thing, is turning a foriegner as a puppet to treat other foriegners like Koreans. So please be quiet about territory, what a stupid comment.

*their slave. Boy howdy I hope you're military and not a teacher! Because I will not be conformed to there slave literally makes no grammatical sense.

This post, guys, is a perfect example of why those that do not like our presence here, feel that way.

YOU ARE NOT IN AMERICA NOW. AMERICA IS NOT THE WORLD. WHEN YOU ARE IN OTHER COUNTRIES HAVE THE RESPECT TO FOLLOW THEIR CUSTOMS.

Also numb LEARN TO SPELL before you attempt to spell big words please. For a start, it's 'foreigner' not 'foriegner'... god I hope you're military and not a teacher.

God, the ignorance on display here...

Korean apologism at it's best!

Now that said, another poster wrote about some Koreans hating it we spoke Korean. I had an old bag of a principal a while back. SHe's prob retired by now. She spoke English but would bark at me to speak English if I ever tried to speak Korean to her. Guess I'm not pure enough to speak their language. She also would bark orders at lunch time if female teachers sat too close too me and would get them to sit on her other side. Still wondering why I never kicked that (ㅛnt in the teeth. Anyhow, things build up over time. You take it and it piles up and eventually you get sick of it. Eventually yyou want to start telling folks off. Not saying everyone here is like that. Just some. Does seem less than before, but still around.

*Idiot* Americans do it all the time. Hell, in the Transformers movie, one of them tells the other guy "English, man...English." I've heard many times.

The smart thing to do would be to say, "Hey, a Korean said he didn't like hearing English. Of course not all Koreans think this way, so I will just assume that that guy is an idiot, and not apply it to all Koreans."

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20130119144411AAF9P45

But of course, we can't have that now can we? Need another dumbass reason to complain and apply generalizations instead of realizing that there are idiots and racist bigots in every country.

Stop acting like none of this bs eve happens in America.

The basis of the problem is that so many foreigners here are in the minority for the first time, that they literally do not know how to handle it. It is freaking them out.
